A fire seal refers to a material or component that is used to prevent or control the spread of fire and smoke through openings in buildings such as doors, vents or electrical slots. Intumescent materials, in particular, expand rapidly when exposed to high temperatures thereby increasing their volume and forming a barrier that can help protect the building from fire and heat. BS 476:1987 Part 20 is a British Standard that sets out the performance requirements for fire-resistant materials and elements used in construction and building projects.
