Tata Steel provides a comprehensive range of products and techniques to create value for the construction industry and support sustainable development.
Construction is a highly localised industry with significant variances between countries and regions. In all markets, we work closely with our customers to deliver solutions aimed at improving cost-effectiveness and speed of construction, increasing the functionality and performance of buildings and infrastructure.
Our goal is to reduce the consumption of resources, including energy, both in the original construction process and in ongoing usage. From helping to build the world’s most impressive buildings to providing the metal and expertise for infrastructure projects, Tata Steel has the products and services to meet the needs and standards of the global construction sector.
The construction industry is Tata Steel’s largest single market globally, and the Group offers a range of products and systems that can be segmented according to their primary function – structural products (tubes, composite floor deck and metal roof decking), building envelope products (roof and wall products) and internal fit out applications (HVAC).
All products manufactured in the UK are Certified to BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Standard.
In addition to our product range, we have a team of construction professionals with significant experience who can advise on optimal use of our products in your building to ensure that you meet your client’s requirements, Building Regulations and Planning Requirements.

Tata Steel - Why the UK needs a strong steel sector
"The UK steel sector could be the first globally to decarbonise, with the right parameters in place," says a new report from trade organisation, UK Steel.
Introducing the report on its website this week, UK Steel says:
"Steel is central to meeting the UK’s decarbonisation objectives, from reducing the emissions of the material itself to its use in energy infrastructure and technologies that will enable a Net Zero economy. A meaningful decarbonisation strategy must clearly focus on consumption emissions, not just emissions from steel produced domestically.
"Increased reliance on steel imports could lead to higher emissions if imported steel is produced in a more carbon-intensive steel plant. UK steel production sites are less carbon-intensive than the global average for both blast furnace and electric arc furnace steelmaking, and therefore import increases will likely lead to a rise in UK greenhouse gas emissions."
Steel is a key driver of economic growth and supply chain resilience
Steel is a foundation industry, literally the building block of our society, feeding into everything from construction to transport, critical national infrastructure, defence, energy pipelines, wind turbines, household goods, food packaging, and medical, industrial and agricultural equipment. Steel is the bedrock of the UK’s supply chains and is fundamental to the future of the UK economy, our economic resilience and national security. The industry supports thousands of jobs and communities both directly and indirectly along the supply chain, particularly in Wales and the North East of England.
Steel is central to the UK’s decarbonisation journey
Steel is also central to any ambition to decarbonise the UK economy – a meaningful decarbonisation, not through deindustrialisation and offshoring emissions, but by actually taking responsibility for the emissions of our steel consumption. With its infinite recyclability, steel is an essential component of a circular economy, generating thousands of green jobs and powering the decarbonisation of other sectors too. It is used in every single technology that a green economy relies on, from wind turbines and solar panels to electric vehicles and hydrogen infrastructure.
The UK is in a prime position to lead green steelmaking as one of the
largest scrap suppliers in the world
The UK is in a prime position to lead the world on Net Zero steel and grow the green economy by tapping into its strengths and resources. Not only is the UK already leading the way on renewable energy and boasting world-class research and innovation, but it also has abundant access to a critical resource, steel scrap, which has a central role to play in the steel sector’s decarbonisation journey. In addition to the obvious widespread economic and environmental benefits of steelmaking in the UK, access to a key raw material further enhances the business case for UK steel production as we transition to increasingly electric scrap-based processes.
Tata Steel's Colorcoat® meets new EN 10169 standards for pre-finished steel
With the EN 10169 standards changing, placing a renewed emphasis on the importance of UV and corrosion resistance, Tata Steel is pleased to announce that its Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel products continue to meet some of the highest classifications possible.
The standards for EN 10169 dictate the performance requirements for pre-finished steel, including its UV and corrosion resistance, with the new 2022 standards representing the biggest move to performance of the product category for many years.
Tata Steel is pleased to announce that both its Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel products surpass the requirements of RC5+ as per EN 10169, providing excellent corrosion resistance. This new RC5+ category is the highest classification available for corrosion resistance, with products meeting this level of performance having to undergo extensive weathering tests at a C5 exposure site for at least four years with satisfying results – i.e., resist blistering, coating damage and edge peel to less than 2mm. Samples of Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® were exposed to the extreme coastal environment of Brest on the west coast of France to assess corrosion resistance. Both products utilise the Galvalloy® metallic coating, which is an essential element of the super durable properties.
EN10169 Test
What’s more, in addition to corrosion resistance, Tata Steel’s Colorcoat Prisma® – a 3 layer pre-finished steel product renowned in the industry for its superior aesthetics – has been proven to surpass the requirements of Ruv5, in accordance with EN 10169. The Ruv5 category, also new for 2022, is now the highest classification available for UV resistance. To achieve this, products have to achieve a minimum of 4 years weathering in a UV exposure site, with satisfying colour and gloss retention results. EN 10169 stipulates that, for Ruv5 classification: the percentage gloss retention must be greater than 80% after each test and the extent of colour change must be less than 3 DE following natural weathering exposure.
Speaking about the achievement, Dr Peter Barker, Manager - New Product Development at Tata Steel said: “The Colorcoat® brand has long been synonymous with providing high-quality, durable pre-finished steel to the construction industry. Now, with our achievement of RC5+ and Ruv5 for Colorcoat Prisma® (Metallics, Solids, Matts and Elements range) and RC5+ and Ruv4 for Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra®, our customers can remain confident that they are getting products that meet the highest performance levels for their project.
“At Tata Steel, we seek to not only meet the standards but exceed them. That’s why we currently have over 10 years of weathering evidence, far more than the four years set out by the Standards, and also why we offer a guarantee of up to 40 years on both of our pre-finished steel products used for the weatherside of industrial and commercial buildings. By choosing Colorcoat® branded products architects, specifiers, contractors and developers can be provided with the assurance that their building will have a long life-span, standing strong and looking great for many years to come. In the drive for lower carbon buildings, a more durable product can ultimately provide more sustainable benefits in the use stage of a project.”
Manufactured in the UK, the Colorcoat® pre-finished steel products are certified to BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Standard and can support both BREEAM and LEED certification.
