Hep2o - How to Connect MLCP to Copper Pipe
Multi-layer composite piping (MLCP) has become increasingly popular among installers over the years thanks to its durability, flexibility and resistance to corrosion and suitability for use in continuously operated recirculating systems. At Wavin we have developed our own complete range of multi-layer composite pipe and fitting solutions that are ideal for potable water, sanitary and heating applications from residential to large scale industrial builds and commercial installations.
In this blog, we’ll explore the Tigris range in more detail including how it can successfully connect to copper pipe.
What is Tigris K5?
Tigris K5/M5 is a MLCP press-fit plumbing system which delivers high-quality performance and reliability.
As a leading system which is used all over Europe, Tigris K5 has been specially manufactured and includes a number of unique features including reliable O-ring sealing, incredible pipe grip, clear visual water leaking when sleeve isn’t pressed correctly, easy pipe insertion without calibration as well as enhanced pipe position visibility.
What’s more the Tigris K5 achieves fantastic flow performance thanks to the increased inner bore, it can be pressed with a number of common pressing profiles and generates a loud whistle enabling installers to easily detect any unpressed fittings.
Is MLCP compatible with copper pipe?
MLCP and copper pipes can work effectively together in plumbing systems creating seamless connections that guarantee reliability and efficiency.
Due to its flexibility and ease of installation in challenging areas, the Tigris K5 MLCP perfectly complements copper piping, offering a versatile solution that delivers outstanding performance.
The process of connecting MLCP to copper pipe
The Tigris K5 MLCP system is easily connected to existing copper installations and takes just a few simple steps to create a reliable and secure connection.
Preparing MLCP and copper pipe
Always check the copper pipe for any damages or burrs as they will need to be removed before you start.
Assembling MLCP and copper pipe
When it comes to the assembly, make sure to follow the specifications supplied by the copper fitting manufacturer and avoid soldering to not damage the sealing rings.
1: Simply slide the press connection into the copper fitting. Press the pipe according to the specifications of the copper fitting manufacturer but remember that a minimum space of 5mm is needed between the soldered joint and outer edge of the copper fitting to create a secure connection.
2: Then press the copper fitting onto the pipe using the instructions given by the copper fitting manufacturer.
3: Next you’ll need to mount the Tigris K5 pipe and push the pipe into the fitting until the stop which will be visible in the fix-ring window.
4: The final step is executing the pressing which should only be done once per sleeve. As Tigris K5 is compatible with a range of profiles, here’s an overview of where the pressing jaws should be placed depending on which profile is used:
U/Up/H profiles 16-40mm
The pressing jaws should cover the metal cap in between the fix-ring and the metal cap rim.
TH/B profiles 16-20mm
One jaw-groove should cover the fix-ring and the other should cover the metal cap collar.
TH/B profiles 25 – 40mm
Only the fix-ring is covered by the jaw-groove. The metal cap collar should not be covered by the jaw-groove.
Tigris K5 MLCP
Ultimately when you choose to work with the Tigris K5 system, connecting MLCP to copper pipes is incredibly easy to do and will create a secure and watertight connection.
With its distinctive features Tigris K5 is a fantastic press-fit plumbing system which can be used for both hot and cold drinking water. Visit our website to find out more details.
