Forty years ago, we pioneered suspended metal ceilings. With metal ceilings in aluminium, steel, copper and stretch metal, in types ranging from linear and wide panel to open cell, curved and tile, the only limits are in your imagination. Hunter Douglas has established a long history of groundbreaking innovations. Recent innovations include Luxacote®, a special durable finish for exterior ceilings to protect against corrosion, abrasion and aggressive environments.
We also manufacture a extensive range of external metal ceilings including linear, wide panel to curves and tiles. Designed to remain secure in exposed conditions, Hunter Douglas external metal ceilings are ideal for canopies and forecourts.
We offer a large range of decorative and functional finishes to create maximum freedom in design for numerous applications. Standard finishes include brushed, mirror, embossed, zinc, anodized, matt, glossy and natural metal. Custom finishes and colours available.
Wood ceiling systems from Hunter Douglas are available in all kinds of wood, allowing architects to explore the natural characteristics of the material, including growth patterns and colour variations. Together with a variety of wood types, we apply different finishing techniques that further define the look of the ceiling design.
We can also address a range of acoustical requirements with wooden ceilings by using perforation patterns or adjusting the spacing of linear-ceiling joints. Our timber ceilings can be specified as an internal wooden ceilings or external wooden ceilings. All our wooden ceilings are available in fire-retardant versions and meet all requirements of the European CE2004 certification.
HeartFelt® is an innovative, patented product that turns every ceiling into a visual and acoustic playground. The felt panels are available in five beautiful grey shades and can be easily clipped to the carriers, at varying distances.
Hunter Douglas Architectural ceiling has the “wow” factor in London hotel
A four-star hotel in the financial district of Canary Wharf, London, which draws its design inspiration from the area’s
industrial heritage, has been enhanced with a Hunter Douglas Architectural ceiling that has the ‘wow’ factor.
When guests first enter the Lincoln Plaza London, which is part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, they are greeted by a distinctively designed lobby / bar area – with a stunning Hunter Douglas Architectural solid wood open grill ceiling.
Ashley Cole, general manager of the hotel, said the dramatic curved ceiling, which is manufactured from Ayous wood, immediately captures people’s attention.
“Most people look up when they come in and say, ‘wow’, which is just the reaction we want,” he said. “The unusual wave shape is a nod to the water that is around the hotel and it is an impressive addition to the interior design. The attention to detail is incredible. It creates space and certainly sets the mood and tone.”
The hotel is part of the high-rise Lincoln Plaza deluxe apartments and it was fitted out by Fileturn, which commissioned high-spec interiors including a feature polished concrete spiral staircase, polished concrete floors, steel feature walls, Crittall-style windows and reclaimed materials such as railway sleepers.
The original specification for the lobby ceiling was for a curved timber grill ceiling in Cambara wood, but when that was design engineered out of the specification, Kevin Taylor, of Hunter Douglas Architectural, suggested using Ayous wood instead and staining it the same colour as Cambara.
This more economical option was agreed – yet the finish is still first class. Hunter Douglas Architectural was specified to supply 200m2 of open solid wood grill ceiling in 3-100-30-120. The lengths were designed to fit with minimal onsite cutting required and to make the panels curved, a plastic pipe was used for the connecting dowels in lieu of rigid aluminium.
The undulating, wave effect ceiling was fitted on to a specially designed and created curved carrier and fixed into place with standard ‘J’ clips.
Hunter Douglas Architectural also supplied a multi-panel ceiling for the back-of-house corridor, consisting of 150m2 of different height and width white panels all on a single carrier type. The ‘un-pronged’ carrier had the panels fixed with appropriate size clips for each panel width, which enabled the panels to be ‘fanned’ around the curved sections of the corridor, which is the shared access for apartment owners and hotel guests to the spa area.
Hunter Douglas HeartFelt® ceiling creates continuity in 2nd phase of Girlguid Centre
Hunter Douglas HeartFelt® ceiling creates continuity in second phase of Girlguiding activity centre
The architect behind a new Girlguiding activity centre in Cheshire was so pleased with the performance of Hunter Douglas Architectural’s innovative felt ceiling that he recommended it for the second phase of the development.
John Piercy Holroyd, Associate Director of Walker Simpson Architects, specified Heartfelt® for the ceiling in the activity hall and dining room for Pettypool, the activity centre in a woodland area in Sandiway, Cheshire, commissioned by Girlguiding Cheshire Forest.
When it came to overseeing the construction of the second phase of the development, he and his clients were so impressed with its acoustic performance and aesthetic qualities that it was decided to use it in the common areas of the bedroom block instead of a gypsum plank, which had been originally specified.
“We really wanted to have a commonality of material language between the two phases, so we decided to have the Heartfelt® ceiling in all the circulation spaces,” said John.
“It helped us to transform the idea of what is basically a circulation space to somewhere that feels quite special. It raised the profile of how that area would feel.”
The architect developed new graphics and colourways on the flooring to complement the 35m2 of Heartfelt ceiling in ‘Off-white’ (7595), ‘Light Grey’ (7596), ‘Middle Grey’ (7597), and also adapted the lighting system so that it better complemented the first phase.
John said unlike phase one, the ceiling in the common areas of phase two building had to cover a large amount of servicing, such as duct pipework, but it had to be easily accessible. Heartfelt® accommodates those needs easily, thanks to its simple demountable system, which demonstrates its versatility, he said.
“The client was more than happy to change to Heartfelt® for the continuity of materials as well as the inherent acoustic properties as well as ease of future maintenance,” added John.
The second phase of Pettypool, which has a striking steel portal frame with insulated metal-faced cladding panels and feature timber finish, accommodates eight en-suite bedrooms, each of which sleeps six occupants, as well as two leaders’ bedrooms, each of which sleeps four. There is also an accessible room for one person and a carer and includes a wet room.
David Harris, general manager of Hunter Douglas Architectural, said: “We were very pleased to have been recommended for the second phase at Pettypool, thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response to the Heartfelt® ceiling in the leisure area of the building.
“Architects and specifiers have told us how much they like the ceiling, not just for its aesthetic qualities, but also because it is cost-effective and recyclable.”
Heartfelt®, which won the prestigious Red Dot award for product design in 2017, complies with regulations for use in non-polluting buildings, is resistant to dirt and dust, meets the indoor European standard EN 15251, and EN 13501 Class B, S1, d0 fire certification.
The panels are manufactured using thermoformed polyester fibres, which are 100% recyclable – earning the system C2C Bronze certificate from the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. The panels are available in up to 6m lengths and are fixed via a special carrier system. They are available in a range of panel size, joint width and mounting height.
The panels are available in: five shades of grey, black, white, cream, light brown, medium brown, dark brown and umber.
