Extremely Longlife

KEIM mineral silicate paint systems were invented over 140 years ago to provide long term protective and decorative finishes for mineral substrates subject to harsh climatic conditions. There are many examples throughout Europe of buildings that were decorated over 100 years ago with KEIM mineral paint systems that are still in good condition today.

KEIM Mineral Paint is Different

KEIM has been widely used and specified extensively throughout the UK over the past 30 years for both external and internal projects. KEIM paint comprises of a potassium silicate binder with inorganic mineral fillers and natural earth-oxide colour pigments. The paint penetrates into the mineral substrate to form a chemical crystalline bond, becoming an integral part of the surface. This ensures an extremely longlife protective paint system.

Keim - Beyond Paint:

The product and service range has long since extended beyond pure paint products: our product portfolio is rounded off by mineral plasters and fillers, products for concrete restoration and concrete cosmetics, for indoors and outdoors, and natural stone systems. The concept of sustainability shapes the spirit of the company. In 1993, KEIM launches the world’s first healthy interior paint and later receives the world’s first natureplus certifications for interior and facade paints. The outstanding ecological profile of our products is evident, from resource-saving production and use of natural raw materials, through the product composition with no addition of solvents, preservatives and plasticisers, to the extremely long service life of KEIM paints. Over 60 products have received the Cradle to Cradle Certified® certification in silver and have also been awarded the Material Health Certificate at the Gold level.

KEIM NATURAL STONE SYSTEM:

Natural stone is one of the most noble and durable construction materials. Conserving and prompt strengthening of this valuable building material is at the core of the KEIM product range natural stone systems. Whether stone consolidation or hydrophobic impregnation, as a stone substitute or protective coating, in the natural stone system segment you will find materials which meet the requirements of the material and protect and conserve its character.

KEIMFARBEN renews Cradle to Cradle certification

April 2025

Since 2022, KEIM products have been Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver and hold the Material Health Certificate™ in Gold. Now, KEIM paints from the two product groups ‘Mineral products for mineral substrates’ and ‘Mineral products for non-mineral substrates’ have been successfully recertified: All products again achieved silver certification, and in the categories of Material Health, Social Fairness and Water Stewardship, they again achieved the gold standard. Particularly notable is the improvement in the ‘Renewable Energy’ category: here, KEIMFARBEN went from silver to gold and now achieves the gold standard in four out of five categories (previously three out of five).

‘We were able to increase the number of certified KEIMFARBEN products from 65 to a total of 80. That's over 85% of our paint sales,’ explains Peter Treitz, Head of Product Management. This not only underlines KEIMFARBEN's commitment to sustainability, but also strengthens its leading position as a pioneer in the construction industry. A wide range of Cradle to Cradle-certified paint systems is available to planners, processors and building owners. These make it possible to design new buildings and renovations with coatings that are verifiably recyclable, harmless to health and durable. ‘Our products meet the requirements of the ‘Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings’,’ emphasises Peter Treitz. Developed by the German Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction, the “Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings” promotes a unified understanding of sustainability while also creating a legally sound basis for the allocation of funding.

The C2C Certified Material Health Certificate™ Level Gold confirms compliance with the strictly defined assessment criteria based on all ingredients and components of the product. The independent Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute in San Francisco only awards Gold certification to products that do not contain any substances from the list of banned chemicals and that pose no danger to health or the environment. For over 145 years, KEIM has been committed to sustainability and consistently avoids problematic ingredients such as solvents, plasticisers, film protection agents and preservatives.

KEIM – A NOVEL SOLUTION FOR REFRESHING BRICKWORK

February 2025

KEIM – A NOVEL SOLUTION FOR REFRESHING BRICKWORK

SOME OF THE BEST INNOVATIONS COME ABOUT BY CHANCE; WHEN YOU’RE PRESENTED WITH A REQUIREMENT, AND EXPERIMENT TO FIND A SOLUTION.
THAT’S EXCACTLY WHAT HAPPENED AT KEIM MINERAL PAINTS WHEN THE HALNAKER TECHNIQUE WAS ‘BORN.’

KEIM Mineral Paints are problem solvers, committed to helping customers achieve creative finishes using their varied product range, making them the ‘go to’ manufacturer of choice for renovation, conservation, and preservation projects alike. As well as mainstream products such as interior and exterior paints, they supply products for more problematic projects such as repair works to damaged brick facias that have been exposed to damp, frost or harsh weather conditions.

Time and again KEIM are contacted by decorators, architects, and conservationists when facing an unusual task, whether that’s a building with its brickwork in decline, or a new build where the client appreciates the many benefits of KEIM and will only use eco-friendly paint products.

HOW DID THE HALNAKER TECHNIQUE START?
Vanessa Fox, Commercial Manager at KEIM gives us the background, ‘The first project where the technique was conceived was a domestic property in Chichester. When we visited site, the exterior brickwork was severely damaged due to years of exposure to wet weather, and an ingress of driven rain, which had resulted in trapped moisture within the walls, weakening the integrity of the structure.’

Vanessa continued, ‘Our products are all manufactured using only inorganic, natural ingredients, with the key characteristic that they allow the painted surface to breathe. The high level of water vapour permeability (breathability) helps release trapped moisture preventing long term damage such as flaking paint or damp. We knew our render would be able to help, it was just a matter of experimenting with the product’s consistency and application technique to create the finish required.’

To fill the mortar joints, even out the cracks between the brickwork and provide a smooth breathable long-lasting coverage, KEIM Universal Render Fine (KEIM Uniputz 0.6) was chosen as the ideal solution.
Having experimented with the mix ratio, the perfect consistency was found, applied to the pre-wetted surfaces by trowel and laid off with a grout float to reinstate the brick faces and repoint the mortar joints, retaining the brick finish.

WHAT WAS THE RESULT?

Having applied KEIM Universal Render Fine (KEIM Uniputz 0.6) to the brickwork and left to dry for a period of 15 days, KEIM Soldalit, a silicate paint, was then used as decoration. This is an exterior paint that has a real depth and richness of colour due to its ingredients and consistency, which is also fire resistant to category A2-s1, d0.

The result is a flawless, beautiful covering retaining a brick finish, which will provide decades of protection to the project.

WHERE ELSE HAS HALNAKER BEEN USED?

Once Halnaker was conceived, it didn’t take long before the technique of using the specific mix and application of KEIM Universal Render Fine (KEIM Uniputz 0.6) and final KEIM Soldalit paint decoration was deemed ideal for other projects. These include The George Hotel in Rye, using striking shades of Soldalit for its fascia face lift, and Poole Museum where Halnaker will provide protection from the salty sea air.
