Abacus Lighting, established in 1958, is a leading provider of innovative lighting solutions. The company specialises in designing, manufacturing, and installing high-quality lighting products for the rail industry. Abacus focuses strongly on sustainability and energy efficiency and serves various sectors, including infrastructure, sports, car parks, amenities, and public areas. The company is known for its pioneering columns, masts, and intelligent lighting systems that enhance safety and visibility. Committed to excellence, Abacus Lighting combines cutting-edge technology with exceptional customer service to meet the evolving needs of global markets.
In the 1970s, British Rail adopted the Abacus base-hinged column as standard across all its platforms, car parks, and rail sidings. This legacy can still be seen and utilised for retrofitting at most Network Rail stations today.
Abacus’s product range now includes many new technologies to address modern-day challenges, including the specifiable and retrofittable York Hinge for converting existing fixed columns into raise and lower columns. The York Hinge is suitable for use with a range of luminaires including the latest addition to the Abacus lighting range, the EOS rail lantern.
The EOS LED rail lantern offers six optic options, three body sizes, and various wattages. It can be installed as either a top- or side-mounted rail lantern to provide a lighting solution for virtually any rail scheme.
Abacus’s Quartz Evo LED bollard is available in non-conductive GRP or robust steel/alloy versions and offers unrivalled spacing between bollards. Designed specifically for the rail industry the Quartz Evo bollard offers savings on cost, time, and energy because fewer bollards are needed to outshine the competition while achieving the same safety standards.
The Orion Pro LED luminaire is retrofittable and provides superb railway station car park security and safety illumination. Designed for lighting large areas to lighting safety standards. The Orion Pro LED luminaire ensures maximum spacing between columns and has up to 500W, 360o Symmetrical or 180o Asymmetrical options. In addition to market-leading light distribution, accessory attachments for enhanced efficiency or security can be used with the Orion Pro LED Luminaires, through its Zhaga control sockets to run PIRs or CCTV cameras. Abacus Lighting - Tesco Extra – Bletchley Park
About our Client
Tesco is one of the UK’s leading retailers, recognised for its commitment to sustainability, safety, and providing inviting environments for shoppers and staff.
At the Tesco Extra – Bletchley Park site, ensuring high-quality, energy-efficient lighting was a priority to enhance both safety and customer experience while meeting Tesco’s rigorous specifications.
The Challenge
The existing lighting system at Tesco Extra Bletchley Park was failing to meet Tesco’s strict requirements for illumination, energy efficiency, and environmental standards. The old high masts and luminaires needed replacing to improve light levels, reduce energy consumption, and align with Tesco’s sustainability goals.
Tesco Extra required a reliable supplier to provide high-performance lighting that met their specific criteria. Abacus Lighting was tasked with delivering a solution that would achieve these goals and ensure long-lasting, efficient performance.
The Solution
Abacus Lighting supplied 17 10m high masts, each fitted with the innovative Orion Pro LED luminaires, a product designed to meet Tesco’s exacting standards.
The Orion Pro LED was selected for its superior energy efficiency, excellent light uniformity, and low-glare design. By incorporating these luminaires, the new system not only meets Tesco’s specifications but also significantly reduces energy consumption and supports their environmental commitments.
Key Benefits:
• Enhanced safety and visibility for customers and staff.
• Energy savings through efficient, low-maintenance LED technology.
• A solution aligned with Tesco’s sustainability objectives.
Abacus Lighting is proud to have contributed to Tesco’s vision for a brighter, safer, and more sustainable Bletchley Park store.

ABACUS LIGHTING - London Container Terminal
Project Overview
The Port of Tilbury, located on the River Thames in London, is one of the UK’s leading ports, renowned for its strategic location and rich history. Established in the late 19th century to meet the increasing demands of the London docks, it has transformed into a modern hub that handles a diverse range of cargo, including containers, bulk goods, cars, and building products. Its proximity to London and major transport routes makes it essential for trade and logistics, supporting both the UK economy and global supply chains.
The Solution
Abacus Lighting has successfully completed a landmark LED retrofit project at the Port of Tilbury, enhancing the port’s operations with energy-efficient Challenger 1 floodlights. The Tilbury Port is one of the highest retrofit projects, undertaken by Abacus Lighting to date.
The retrofitting of Challenger 1 (CH1) LED floodlights on high masts and towers included:
4 x CH1 on a 38m fixed lattice tower
6 x CH1 on a 47m fixed lattice tower
4 x CH1 on a 47m fixed mast
4 x CH1 on a 40m fixed mast
4 x CH1 on a 35m fixed mast
The floodlights, which are mounted on masts equipped with internal climbing ladders for safe maintenance access, provide excellent illumination. This ensures improved visibility and operational efficiency across the port’s critical areas, even in challenging weather conditions.
The upgrade offers significant benefits to the port, including enhanced safety for workers and drivers, reduced energy consumption, and a lower carbon footprint due to the superior efficiency of the Challenger 1 technology. Additionally, the system’s reliability minimises maintenance disruptions, further supporting the port’s busy operations.
With a projected payback period of just two years, this investment aligns with the port’s long-term sustainability goals, providing both immediate and future cost savings while reinforcing its commitment to modern, eco-friendly infrastructure.
