Green Wall Benefits – our systems combine great design scope with a range of ecological and performance advantages.
- Improves aesthetics: A well designed and maintained Green Living Wall can significantly enhance a building’s appearance – whether for example, it’s to add a new aesthetic dimension, disguise a car park, refresh a tired façade, introduce flora and fauna, or add colour and texture to a complete wall or section.
- Protect building façades: Green wall systems can help to protect a building’s façade and further extend its life. Acting as an effective shield to frost and heavy rain and helping to protect from the damaging effects of UV light.
- Improve air quality: A green wall in an urban area can help improve local air quality. The living walls absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, as well as trap dust and other pollutants. Learn more about how Green Living walls can help clean the air we breath.
- Reduce noise: By adding a layer of insulation (both thermal and acoustic) green walls absorb sound, making a positive impact for both the building’s occupants and the local environment.
- Regulate temperature and reduce carbon footprint: A green wall used on appropriate elevations can reduce energy costs by providing an additional layer of insulation. In the winter, green walls keep heat in, similarly in the summer acting as a screen to the sun, they keep the building cool.
- Provide wildlife habitats: With appropriate planting, a green wall provides an ideal habitat for wildlife. In many cases, it can also provide an alternative habitat for any wildlife displaced during construction. Bird houses and bat boxes can also be integrated within the structure to provide wildlife habitats.
- Deter graffiti: In areas where graffiti is a potential problem, green walls can act as an effective deterrent; making the application of graffiti to the building structure almost impossible.
Commercial Green Wall Systems
Our Commercial Green Walls have been used in projects large and small across the UK. We have supplied simple panels to decorate what would otherwise be bare expanses of brickwork, up to more complex structures with full irrigation and planting schemes on multiple building facades.
Used in retail, leisure, health, education and office developments; in local and central government programmes and for both new build and refurbishment projects, this modern, precision engineered green wall system provides great design flexibility. Working closely with customers, we develop solutions that meet virtually any location and performance requirements, or budget constraints.
Equally suitable for internal or external use, our systems fix into timber, concrete, steel or brick structures. Tailored to suit the characteristics of different plants.
Residential Green Wall Systems
Our modern, stainless steel residential green wall kits bring a new dimension to garden design. Giving homeowners and landscape designers the opportunity to create living walls; adding life to tired buildings, garden features and boundary walls.
- Offering great value for money, our residential green wall systems are drawn from a range of precision-engineered components. This provides real design flexibility and means that a system can be tailored to meet almost any dimensional requirements.
- From entire walls to fans, narrow panels to L-shapes, a Green Wall can be simply created and installed, providing a new visual aspect to any garden project, large or small, and tying in easily with existing features such as columns, pergolas or summer houses.
- Amongst the many benefits, our residential green walls are virtually maintenance free and, fast and easy to install, they can be fixed to most standard structures, including timber, brick, concrete and steel. Different plant varieties can be accommodated; so too can different locations and fixings – and budgets.

Maximising Urban Spaces with Green Walls
As populations grow and the effects of climate change intensify, incorporating green infrastructure into towns and cities has become more important than ever in maintaining liveable and healthy urban environments. So, why choose Jakob Green Walls for your urban greening solutions?
Urban spaces are often heavily concreted, with green spaces becoming increasingly few and far between. Green Walls, also known as living walls, present an innovative way to transform otherwise dull cityscapes into brighter, healthier spaces. At MMA Architectural Systems, we have perfected the balance of Green Wall installations, seamlessly blending greening with urban infrastructure.
Aesthetic and Functional Transformation
Green Walls can enhance the visual appeal of otherwise purely functional buildings. When thoughtfully designed and well-maintained, they add dynamic colour and texture to the façade, significantly improving the structure’s overall appearance.
Take, for example, our project at One Hyde Park in London. This development benefits from a balance of modern architectural design and elegant greening.
Similarly, Jakob Green Walls can revitalize retail spaces, turning them into more inviting environments for visitors. By integrating greenery into busy spaces, Green Walls foster a sense of calm and a connection with nature, making these urban hubs not only functional but also enjoyable to be in.
Tackling Urban Challenges & Sustainability
Green Walls are not just about beautification; they address urban challenges head-on. For instance, these installations enhance air quality and provide critical insulation benefits, reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling.
Choosing the right plants can also attract insects and bees, contributing to Biodiversity Net Gain and leaving the local environment in a healthier state – something that is becoming increasingly important
Additionally, plants can absorb sound, making them effective for acoustic insulation. This helps reduce noise pollution, improving the local environment and enhancing comfort for building occupants.
The Future of Green Urban Design
As cities face the challenges of climate change and growing populations, adding Green Walls to urban spaces has become a crucial step. These living walls are more than just eye-catching features; they show a strong commitment to sustainability, offering ecological and social benefits, all while making spaces more beautiful and enjoyable.
They also bring people closer to nature, creating healthier, calmer and more welcoming environments for everyone.

Create Unique Green Structures with Our Parametric Design Service
Introducing Parametric Design for Tendril Structures
Revolutionising the design of trellises, Jakob Rope Systems has launched a new service which enables intricate organic to be created using wire based structures.
These ‘tendril structures’ provide a support framework for climbing plants, allowing them to grow in natural patterns within the structure. The result is a visual effect with dynamic depth, where plants create layers of texture to give a three-dimensional feel to greening solutions.
By using our parametric design service (a concept which draws on algorithms to create complex shapes) as part of the digital planning process, we can unlock a range of new possibilities for architects, urban planners, and landscape designers.
Fabian Graber, Head of Technology at Jakob Rope Systems, explains:
“We’re bringing a new level of 3D design to our customers’ greening architecture. This allows us to offer unique, bespoke solutions for vertical greening, expanding what’s possible in urban planning and design.”
1) Urban space without plants or greenery
2) Facade with vertical tendril structure
3) Facade with green climbing plants
4) Parametric design model with a structured pattern
Expanding Possibilities for Urban Greening
The service is already being used in projects such as vertical green walls on building facades and infrastructure greening along railways and roads. Its potential, however, extends far beyond these applications.
“We can support customers at every stage, from refining initial ideas to managing a project through to installation,” says Graber. “Whether it’s a unique architectural feature or a full-scale urban greening initiative, we’re here to help.”
The Power of Parametric Design
The process begins with Jakob Rope Systems creating a parametric model based on the client’s ideas, needs, or specific requirements. This digital model visualises the desired tendril structure on screen, allowing for adjustments and refinements before moving to the next stages of planning.
Key parameters, such as spacer length, positioning, and distances, are stored in the digital system. This enables rapid iteration of designs, allowing multiple variations of tendril structures to be developed from a single base model.
From the completed digital model, Jakob Rope Systems carries out detailed construction calculations and material planning. The tendril structures are then assembled using the company’s established range of products, such as GreenSolutions, Webnet, and GreenTrellis.
Digital Design, Endless Potential
Parametric design opens up near-limitless possibilities for tendril structures. Here’s how it works:
Variable spacer design: The length, number, and spacing of spacers can all be adjusted within defined tolerances.
Organic shapes with depth effects: Varying spacer lengths create curved, three-dimensional surfaces.
Customisable spacing: Horizontal spacings range from 500 to 1,500 mm, while vertical spacings range from 500 to 2,000 mm, enabling adaptation to specific site conditions.
Edge detailing: Smaller spacing at the edges enhances structural strength and adds a visually appealing finish.
These parameters allow for the creation of structures that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements, offering unparalleled flexibility in design.
