SikaBit Pro Membranes

SikaBit ProMelt is the latest addition to Sika’s Roofing portfolio of bituminous, single ply and cold applied liquid membranes. Predominately, this hot applied membrane is used for inverted cold flat roofing areas or podiums, walkways or balconies due to its non-tracking monolithic state. As a system, SikaBit ProMelt is BBA certified for the durability of the design life of the roof, showcasing its outstanding durability. SikaBit® PRO SA-730 is an SBS modified, bituminous, self-adhesive, roof waterproofing membrane. It is reinforced with a dimensionally stable non-woven polyester inlay which gives high stability and good mechanical properties. The underside has a removable liner over the adhesive compound for easy application. Top surface finish: polyethylene film. Thickness: ~3,0 mm
S-Vap® HD SA is an elastomeric self-adhesive vapour control layer and carrier membrane made of polymer modified bitumen with an aluminium composite and glass combination inlay. The top suface has a sanded finish.
SikaBit® Pro T-240 RT is an APP modified bituminous, torch applied, roof waterproofing membrane containing an anti-root additive. It is reinforced with a dimensionally stable non-woven polyester inlay. The underside has a polyethylene burn-off film for easy application. It it is as protection generally as an anti-root barrier over SikaBit® roofing membranes. Top surface finish: polyethylene film. Thickness: ~4,0 mm

SikaBit - Cyns Tavern, Little Hulton in Salford
Cyns Tavern, is a traditional community pub located in the Little Hulton area of Salford. Since its construction in the 1970s it has maintained its popularity with local residents. The existing felt covering on an area of the roof had reached the end of its service life and in order to prevent further damage to the building fabric, the owner wanted to carry out a roof refurbishment.
The project provided an ideal opportunity for roofing contractor, LRL Roofing Solutions, to leverage the team’s experience in bituminous roofing systems and use the innovative, new SikaBit Safe2Torch system in a project for one of the company’s major customers, Forviva.
SikaBit Cyns Tavern project
The pub is situated in a busy urban location, close to shops and residential properties, and the area of roof involved in the project adjoins the Little Hulton Civic Centre, so safety was top priority throughout.
The project specification called for an upgrade of the existing roof, using the latest hybrid bitumen technology. This was to be applied as an overlay onto the existing roof-build, in full compliance with NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) Safe2Torch Guidelines.
It was therefore, essential that the chosen system was compatible with the existing roof surface and could be installed safely within a short programme, whilst the pub remained open to business.
In order to assess whether the roof was compatible with the Sika Bit’s Safe2Torch system, a detailed roof condition survey was carried out by the technical team. As a result of this the team developed a full specification for installation of a SikaBit Safe2Torch system onto the existing room.
The team at LRL Roofing solutions began by preparing the existing roof by retaining the existing felt and the air and vapour control layer. Sika’s Primer 610 spray adhesive was applied to the roof surface, followed by SikaBit SA 730; the fully self-adhered 3mm underlay that forms part of the complete SikaBit Safe2Torch system.
With the underlay in place across the roof area, LRL Roofing Solutions installed SikaBit T940 G torch-on cap sheet in all the Safe2Torch zones. The self-adhesive SikaBit SA 940G cap sheet was then installed in the torch exclusion zones, which included upstands and a 900mm area at either side of the roof where it adjoins neighbouring structures.
On one corner of the building, where the roof abuts a timber-clad structure, the installation team used Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane solid-applied liquid membrane in combination with the self-adhesive SikaBit system to provide a best practice solution with a joined up specification from a single supplier.
"The fully self-adhered underlay went down well, with great lap seals that enabled us to leave it overnight prior to installation of the cap sheet. We achieved an extremely consistent bleed from the self-adhered cap sheet, providing us with great confidence within the Safe2Torch element of the system. The SikaBit cap sheet was really easy to apply, and we found it more pliable than other bituminous membranes."

SikaBit - Castlemead, London Borough of Southwalk
Castlemead is a social housing block in the London Borough of Southwark, located in the busy Camberwell Road area. The vacant building was undergoing an internal refurbishment project, delivered by fit out specialist, Paragon, and as part of these works the main contractor brought in roofing specialist, Hambro Roofing, to carry out some repairs to the existing felt roof. It quickly became apparent that the existing roof surface had reached the end of its service life and actually required a full refurbishment
SikaBit Castlemead project
The client wanted to use a Safe2Torch-compliant reinforced bitumen membrane (RBM) roofing system that could be installed as an overlay to the existing roof, providing a like-for-like appearance while upgrading the performance and service life of the existing roof covering. SikaBit’s best-of-both-world’s SBS and APAO hybrid bitumen technology provided the ideal solution to achieve consistency of specification while enhancing the roof build-up.
There was also a requirement to reduce the potential for standing water by introducing falls to the roof using a tapered insulation scheme to improve drainage and direct run-off water to existing drainage outlets.
Hambro Roofing suggested to Paragon that the roof should be refurbished with a RBM overlay and proposed the SikaBit system for the project due to the flexibility and tensile strength benefits of the SBS elements combined with the hardwearing properties and UV stability of APAO.
Sikabit’s technical team visited site to carry out a roof condition survey and develop a full technical specification, which included the Safe2Torch SikaBit system and SikaTherm tapered insulation.
The Hambro Roofing team cleaned and prepared the existing roof surface before installing an SVAP HD SA self-adhesive air & vapour control layer (AVCL), which has been specifically developed using SBS bitumen technology, an aluminium layer and a self-adhesive backing to provide a torch-free element of the SikaBit system. The roof was then coated with Sika Primer 600 followed by installation of the tapered insulation scheme.
The SikaBit SA730 fully self-adhered underlay was then installed onto the insulation layer and the Hambro Roofing team installed the torch-on SikaBit T940 G cap sheeet in the Safe2Torch zones, before completing the project by installing SikaBit SA940 G self-adhesive cap sheet in all the torch exclusion zones.
The SikaBit system offered Hambro Roofing the flexibility required to address unforeseen challenges with the roof. During the project, the contractor discovered that there were operational hot water pipes running through a central wall at roof level. The Hambro Roofing team was able to box in the pipes and then dressed the SikaBit system to the boxed area, ensuring it was completely watertight.
To complete the roof installation, Hambro Roofing installed a new GRP trim around the fascia, concealing the change in curb heights prompted by the tapered insulation.
