Applications for Magply boards:

Timber Frame:

As a high performance, multi-functional board, Magply features a Magnesium Oxide formulation, to offer a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products in Timber Frame Construction where the project is in close proximity to another property. Additionally, the unique production process of Magply keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability and long-term durability.

Crucially, Magply carries internationally recognised accreditations confirming the boards’ ability to deliver 90 minutes integrity and insulation under test conditions, furthermore Magply offers excellent racking strength, impact or pull-out resistance and all round ease of use in a variety of applications.

Magply has been tested under BS EN 476 Part 22 for timber frame applications and parts 6&7 to provide Class 0 certification for the surface spread of flames together with other approvals such as EN ISO 1182-2010.

Spandrel Panels:

9mm Magply provides a fire-safe, lightweight environmentally friendly solution for Spandrel Panels. As a high performance, multi-functional board, Magply features a Magnesium Oxide formulation and is manufactured from a production process that ensures a very low chloride content enhancing both stability and durability. Magply is tested for use in spandrel panel applications utilising one 9mm board on each side of a uninsulated spandrel frame to BS 476 (Part 22)1987.

Tilebacker Boards:

Magply Tilebacker is a mineral based, homogeneous, environmentally friendly product with a manufacturing process that produces very little in the way of C02 emissions, unlike cement particle and gypsum boards which both generate high levels of C02. Magply Tilebacker Boards help to provide a safe and healthy living environment whilst being a great surface to tile onto.

Roofing Boards:

Magply recovery and protection boards have been developed to meet the roofing industry needs for a cost effective, lightweight and fireproof board that will provide an inert and stable separating layer for all types of waterproofing overlay applications. Magply can also be used as a tough, durable and reusable protection layer over completed installations. 9mm Magply provides a fire-safe, lightweight environmentally friendly solution for Spandrel Panels.

Dry Lining Boards:

Magply is ideally placed for Dry-Lining specifications that require quick installation, less weight, breathability and fire protection and boards are manufactured 1200mm x 2400mm in 6,9,12 and 18mm, bespoke sizes are available on request. As a high performance, multi-functional board Magply features a Magnesium formulation to offer a fire-rated environmentally friendly board for the highest quality dry lining.

Rainscreen Cladding Panels:

As a high performance, multi-functional board Magply features a Magnesium formulation to offer a fire-rated environmentally friendly board for rainscreen cladding. Additionally the unique production process of Magply keeps the Chloride content to just 0.01% enhancing both stability and long term durability. Magply provides A1 performance in rainscreen cladding applications and has been tested in accordance to EN 13501 Class A1 Non-Combustible inline with the Building Control Alliance Technical note 18 ‘use of Combustible Cladding Materials on residential buildings paragraph 12.7 of AD B2 – use materials of limited combustibility throughout the cladding system.

DUBLIN APARTMENTS USE OFFSITE SYSTEM FEATURING MAGPLY PERFORMANCE

The full range of performance benefits to Magply boards have been utilised in the specification of an advanced offsite system being employed in the construction of a new apartment building standing alongside a famous central Dublin landmark on Amiens street.

Linham Construction is the main contractor and developer for the Five Lamps project, which is creating ten single bedroom apartments plus a two-bedroom, duplex property. The structure has been designed and specified by Building Surveying consultants, Merriman Solutions, to achieve an A1 Building Energy Rating under Part L of the Building Regulations. Edge structural engineers provided structural engineering for the LGS frame. 9mm Magply boards are being used to walls and 12mm to ceilings of construction for their strength, fire performance and overall durability as well as their excellent weather resistance during the build period.

The principal consultant, Fergus Merriman, commented: “The Five Lamps project is using a totally offsite system manufactured by Framespace Solutions in County Roscommon and delivered to this congested site at a busy location in panel formincorporating: windows, finishes and as many components and services as possible.

“While in the past we have employed an OSB board for racking strength and to provide robustness during transportation, we had experienced problems with fire requirements and OSB boards breaking down due to exposure to the weather – and we tend to get a lot of rain in Ireland. That is why we have switched to using the Magply MgO board because they are so stable in all conditions and unlike the OSB do not need to be fire protected separately, the MgO boards provide 1 hour fire protection to structure in their own right so a services zone behind a normal plasterboard lining then provides full compliance with Building Regulations parts B and E. This also means the services installation can commence as soon as walls are erected and the entire construction is now of non combustible materials, a must given recent tragic events”.

The five storey building is being clad across different elevations with either the Permarock exterior wall insulation system or the Dutch manufactured Brickworld brick slip system. Both are on Rockwool material fixed to an outside layer of 9mm Magply sheathing which also provides an additional 1 hour fire protection to the structure from the outside. This solution for the envelope will not only achieve a U-value of 0-15 W/m2 K, but the inherent airtightness of Magply is also helping the project team target an air permeability figure of less than 2.0 m3 /m2 /hour.

Fergus Merriman added: “As well as the 9mm Magply fixed to the outside face of the light gauge metal frames for the external walls, 12mm boards are used on the underside of the floor cassettes above a service zone within each of the flats removing cabling without any need for penetrations to the structural envelope. Overall the Magply is easy to cut and fix, while as an MgO product it can get wet as many times as you want. That helps with programme timing while the price-point also makes it very affordable compared to other fire safe products.

Additionally, the unique production process keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability, long-term durability as tested by Bunch and avoiding the chloride issues seen with other formulations. Crucially, Magply carries a full suite of internationally recognised accreditations confirming the boards’ ability to deliver up to 90 minutes’ fire integrity and insulation under test conditions and including EN 1365# tests carried out by Exova.
Furthermore, the range offers excellent racking strength, impact and pull-out resistance. “

MAGPLY BOARDS FRONT SIP SOLUTION FOR STUDENT ACCOMMODATION ON THE SOUTH COAST

A high rise development in Bournemouth for Fresh Student Living is making full use of the technical benefits to an innovative BBA approved structural walling system, which features 9mm Magply boards for both the inner and outer faces to the insulated panels’ design. Oxford Point is close to both the city centre and Bournemouth University’s Talbot Campus, with its 16 storey structure containing studio apartments as well as en-suite study bedrooms in ‘cluster flats’. It has been built by main contractor, the Watkins Jones Group, with MIB Façades being the specialist sub-contractor erecting its own SIPs system.

While many such composite walling solutions use OSB or particleboards to sandwich a foam insulation core, the MIB MetSIP is much more robustly engineered, with 75 mm deep cold-formed steel Sigma studs – plus a 45mm treated timber packer - at 600mm centres. 9mm thick Magply modified MgO boards form the inner and outer skins to the 136mm thick panels, whose excellent U-value is provided by a CO2 blown polyurethane insulation.

Aside from its speed of erection, two of the reasons that the MIB MetSIP system wins specifications for applications, such as the 16 storey Oxford Point tower, is the outstanding weather performance and fire resistance offered by the Magply sheathing.

Unlike timber based boards, Magply is largely unaffected by prolonged exposure to rain, while under independent testing, the material was shown to achieve 90 minutes fire resistance with minimal smoke generation. This means during the critical erection phase, before fire-stopping breaks and other permanent protection can be installed, the structure is far less vulnerable to arson or an accidental blaze.

Tests conducted by an independent laboratory as part of the MIB MetSIP system’s BRE 135 certification showed that the panel suffered no discernible damage after 60 minutes exposure to fire. Also, due to the sheer scale of Oxford Court, the SIP structure stood up to six months exposure without suffering from the winter weather or marine climate, before being completely enclosed by the exterior cladding.
