Applications for Magply boards:

Timber Frame:

As a high performance, multi-functional board, Magply features a Magnesium Oxide formulation, to offer a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products in Timber Frame Construction where the project is in close proximity to another property. Additionally, the unique production process of Magply keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability and long-term durability.

Crucially, Magply carries internationally recognised accreditations confirming the boards’ ability to deliver 90 minutes integrity and insulation under test conditions, furthermore Magply offers excellent racking strength, impact or pull-out resistance and all round ease of use in a variety of applications.

Magply has been tested under BS EN 476 Part 22 for timber frame applications and parts 6&7 to provide Class 0 certification for the surface spread of flames together with other approvals such as EN ISO 1182-2010.

Spandrel Panels:

9mm Magply provides a fire-safe, lightweight environmentally friendly solution for Spandrel Panels. As a high performance, multi-functional board, Magply features a Magnesium Oxide formulation and is manufactured from a production process that ensures a very low chloride content enhancing both stability and durability. Magply is tested for use in spandrel panel applications utilising one 9mm board on each side of a uninsulated spandrel frame to BS 476 (Part 22)1987.

Tilebacker Boards:

Magply Tilebacker is a mineral based, homogeneous, environmentally friendly product with a manufacturing process that produces very little in the way of C02 emissions, unlike cement particle and gypsum boards which both generate high levels of C02. Magply Tilebacker Boards help to provide a safe and healthy living environment whilst being a great surface to tile onto.

Crucially, Magply carries internationally recognised accreditations confirming the boards’ ability to deliver 90 minutes fire integrity and 69 minutes insulation under test conditions. Furthermore Magply offers excellent racking strength, impact or pull-out resistance and all round ease of use in a variety of applications. Magply has been tested under BS EN 1364-1:2015 Steel Frame Partition.

Roofing Boards:

Magply recovery and protection boards have been developed to meet the roofing industry needs for a cost effective, lightweight and fireproof board that will provide an inert and stable separating layer for all types of waterproofing overlay applications. Magply can also be used as a tough, durable and reusable protection layer over completed installations. 9mm Magply provides a fire-safe, lightweight environmentally friendly solution for Spandrel Panels.

Dry Lining Boards:

Magply is ideally placed for Dry-Lining specifications that require quick installation, less weight, breathability and fire protection and boards are manufactured 1200mm x 2400mm in 6,9,12 and 18mm, bespoke sizes are available on request. As a high performance, multi-functional board Magply features a Magnesium formulation to offer a fire-rated environmentally friendly board for the highest quality dry lining.

Rainscreen Cladding Panels:

As a high performance, multi-functional board Magply features a Magnesium formulation to offer a fire-rated environmentally friendly board for rainscreen cladding. Additionally the unique production process of Magply keeps the Chloride content to just 0.01% enhancing both stability and long term durability. Magply provides A1 performance in rainscreen cladding applications and has been tested in accordance to EN 13501 Class A1 Non-Combustible inline with the Building Control Alliance Technical note 18 ‘use of Combustible Cladding Materials on residential buildings paragraph 12.7 of AD B2 – use materials of limited combustibility throughout the cladding system.

The elevations to a five-storey former record store on the South Coast are being finished using a proprietary render system, applied across 12mm Magply boards, secured to the refurbished fabric of the building.
Along with the rest of the outlets belonging to the once ubiquitous music retailer, the store on Western Road, Brighton closed when a new buyer for the business could not be found. Now the building has been transformed through a development by a private company, with Packham Construction from nearby Hove being the main contractor and Brighton based Fullers Plastering undertaking the application of the render system. While both the Ground and Lower Ground floors will continue a retail role with new shop units, the upper three levels have been reconfigured to create 22 studio flats.

Given the exposed location of the building and aggressive marine climate, the specification for the exterior cladding had to be both very durable and suitable for application in all but the most challenging of weather conditions. The solution decided on by the project team features a proprietary two-coat reinforced render system
– K-Rend – spray applied to the Magply panels.

As a general building contractor active across the South-east, Packham Construction is very experienced in carrying out projects of this scale. MD Steve Packham commented: “The original plans regarding the conversion of the old HMV store for the client, developer Mr. Alkadi, was to use a sand/cement render. However, after discussions regarding logistics and the scale of the elevations, it was decided to switch to a high performance render system and Fullers proposed the K-Rend on a substrate of Magply boards.”

The Site Foreman for Fullers Plastering, Simon, recounted: “This is a very large and quite complex building, with some parts being very exposed and high. Our operatives started by screw fixing the Magply boards over battens secured to the original external walls and we are now applying the K-Rend in a process which will take a total of just three weeks, despite the weather having been poor early on.“
“We are using Magply because it has proved good to work with on previous jobs – easy to cut and fix, while it takes the HP12 base coat very well. This is notched before the reinforcement mesh is set in and the second coat is then given a sponge finish, ready for the whole building to be painted.”

Despite offering good adhesion for the decorative render system, Magply boards are far more moisture stable than rival products thanks to their modified MgO formulation that also represents an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB sheets. The production process keeps the chlorine content to just 0.01%, enhancing long-term durability, while Magply boards carry a variety of internationally recognised accreditations.

MAGPLY BOARDS OFFER FIRE PROTECTION FOR PECKHAM APARTMENTS

A ‘shell & core’ style apartment development in one of South London’s up and coming districts is making use of Magply boards’ fire resistance and other performance characteristics, as the lining to a bespoke timber frame package. The five flats are being developed on land adjacent to Peckham Rye railway station by Unboxed Homes while main contractor, Mara Build has overseen all the service provisions and creation of the sub-structure. Cambridgeshire based White Haus is the timber frame specialist that has manufactured and erected the highly energy efficient structural envelope.
Crucially, given the proximity of the building to neighbouring properties, 9mm Magply has been used to line the timber panels, before being sprayed with a polymer based membrane to achieve excellent airtightness. The purple finished Magply MgO boards are therefore the surface purchasers are presented with to fit out to their own specification and taste.

The Project Manager for White Haus, Tony Buck, commented: “We offer clients a bespoke service for the supply and installation of high performance timber frames to meet various specifications - right up to PassivHaus standard – building schools, hospitals and commercial premises as well as domestic properties. While the timber frames normally have a plywood sheathing, we choose to use Magply internally whenever there is a requirement for fire protection as it offers up to 90minutes resistance and meets the increasing threat of arson attacks on construction projects, as well as improving fire safety throughout the life of a building. Then, as with the Peckham development once the 25mm battens have been fixed to create a service cavity, we spray the surface with one of our membranes. Although this project isn’t actually to PassivHaus standard – which would require triple glazed windows and thicker insulation – the sprayed PU insulation in the walls, close fitting Magply boards and our purple membrane will give an air permeability down at 0.6 air changes per hour to work with the heat recovery ventilation system.”

Magply boards carry a range of international certifications while their fire performance has been verified through industry standard tests at the world famous Warrington fire research centre. Following a number of high profile blazes on building sites, such as at Hendon in North London, responsible timber frame manufacturers have been working to reduce their systems’ vulnerability to fire, and Magply provides far better performance than OSB also offering instant protection.
Additionally, Magply’s unique production process keeps the chloride content to just 0.01%, enhancing both stability and long term durability.
