What are the common problems that affect concrete?
There are three key concerns connected with concrete;
Carbonation – this occurs when the surface begins to decay. It’s caused by carbon dioxide, sulphates from vehicle exhaust fumes, or chlorides from de-icing salts. Carbonation can affect the structural strength of the substrate. Not great if the structure is a bridge!
Repairs – remedial repairs are commonplace but can be problematical and lead to a patchwork effect, or colour variants.
Protection – against the ingress of water or driving rain, which can lead to structural damage.
