Closed Loop Recycling Scheme Membership Renewed
We are pleased to confirm that the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) has renewed our membership of its Closed Loop Recycling Scheme for 2023.
Benefits of the scheme include a higher value for the scrap removed and some very powerful green credentials for clients, architects and contractors.
The Council for Aluminium in Building Closed-Loop Recycling Scheme (CLRS) aims to maintain specific ‘grades’ of aluminium alloy scrap, rather than lumping different grades together. The CAB scheme maintains higher grades of aluminium, which improves scrap and reduces the waste that can occur when offcuts are mixed.
The increasing popularity of the CAB’s Closed Loop Recycling Scheme has far reaching implications for aluminium in the UK where smelters are keen to take ‘clean’ scrap back into their production cycle. The end scrap product of clean, chipped, alloy of a specific grade, can remain in the UK and be recycled into billet for further extrusion.
Our Chairman, Karl Prosser, explains the importance of being a member of the CAB CLRS –
“As a fabricator, we find ourselves simply formalising what was good accounting practice in any event, whereby we collect data on recycled weights and ensure strict segregation of material-type, thus optimising the value of our recycled material.
The time penalty for this can be measured in minutes per month, and it feeds directly into our monthly management accounts as a KPI.
As the scheme continues to develop, we hope to see an ever-widening inventory of materials being tracked, as the CLRS really is a benchmark for best practice when it comes to measuring sustainability in a tangible and respected manner.”
