TAILORED HEAT DELIVERS AIR SOURCE PACKAGE FOR RURAL HOUSING DEVELOPMENT
Carlisle based heating sector specialist, Tailored Heat Supplies, has designed and delivered a renewables based underfloor heating package for a development of five, high-specification detached houses in a picturesque village on the edge of the Tees Valley. The two-storey, three, four and five bed homes are being built by Bluerock Homes on a greenfields site in Low Worsall, near Middlesbrough, with Keith Leonard Installations being the building services contractor laying the Emmeti underfloor heating pipes in a conventional screed across all the ground floors, powered by LG R32 Therma V 12 kw air source heat pumps.
Keith Leonard commented: “I have half a dozen installers and two regular sub-contractors carrying out both domestic and commercial contracts across Yorkshire, up to the Scottish Borders, and I have been purchasing products including heat pumps from Tailored Heat for the past decade. In this case Tailored Heat is providing the client, Bluerock Homes, with a comprehensive design and supply package – including the LG heat pumps and the Emmeti underfloor heating – as well as carrying out the commissioning. The service saves companies like mine having to be MCS registered, so when we’ve completed the install, one of Tailored Heat’s engineers will come out to site to check all our work, within a week and provide all the paperwork for the clients to obtain the RHI* grant.”

With each house having a different layout and a ground floor footprint of over 120 m2, Tailored Heat’s individual floorplans include multiple zones – featuring 16mm pipe runs up to 100m in length - connected up to seven, eight, nine or 11 port manifolds. The hydro boxes and the heat exchanger for the LG R32 Therma V heat pumps have been installed external to the buildings, while the expansion vessels and 300 litres hot water cylinders are located in first floor utility cupboards. The design uses a flow temperature of just 450 Centigrade and a ΔT of six degrees to achieve room temperatures of 18-210 C, thereby optimising the energy efficiency of the heat pumps.
Robbie Peel of Bluerock Homes concluded: “We build a dozen or so homes a year, but try and offer far more to our clients than the typical volume housebuilders in terms of higher specification and we include renewables wherever they are feasible. In this case there was no mains gas available, meaning we had the choice of LPG, oil or renewables and opting for air source heat pumps allowed us to keep the SAP calculation high while offering purchasers excellent energy efficiency as well as comfort. The world is moving in the direction of Eco living and this development reflects that.”
