Heavy Duty Movement Joint Covers at Grand Central Birmingham

As part of a £600m redevelopment, Birmingham New Street station and the old Pallasades shopping centre have undergone a major redesign, to create what is now known as Grand Central Birmingham.

With such a large building footprint, Grand Central required an extensive array of movement joint covers to combat the expected building movement.

Since Grand Central is such a high traffic location for both pedestrians and vehicles, it was important to select heavy duty movement joint covers for both the centre itself, and its large adjacent multi-storey car park.

For the interior of the shopping centre, CS supplied the heavy duty APF series. Proven in shopping centres around the world, the APF series is highly resistant to rolling loads, distortion and wear, and features serrated cover plates to provide an anti-slip surface.

For the multi storey car park, CS supplied 25m of the robust KB series movement joint cover.

The KB model features a specially designed centre plate that offers a 1000kg point load capability. Additionally the patented turnbar assembly protects the cover from lateral load damage caused by vehicular traffic moving across it, ensuring a long lifecycle with minimal maintenance requirements. The supplied moisture barrier and drainage assembly ensure a waterproof finish is maintained within the car park structure.
