Attenuation and Soakaway Solutions
Polystorm geocellular solution system is designed for both attenuation and soakaway applications for the control and management of surface water. There are four cells within the range for light to heavy loaded areas with a load bearing capability between 20-80 tonnes per metre square:
- Polystorm Lite
- Polystorm Xtra
For access and maintenance purposes, complementing the range are Polystorm Access and Polystorm Inspect. For shallower applications the Permavoid geocellular system is designed to provide ground water attenuation or infiltration in place of a traditional sub-base in areas with contaminated land or a high water table.
Permavoid podium deck is a lightweight modular solution for the provision of storm water drainage and water harvesting within a deck construction.
The Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe system is available in diameters 750mm-3000mm and provides a robust, flexible, durable and adaptable solution for attenuation, foul sewer, surface water drainage, renewable energy, flood alleviation, pumping stations, displacement ventilation and rainwater harvesting applications. Rainwater Re-use Systems
Rainstream RXL from Polypipe is a range of highly effective solutions for the storage, filtration and re-use of rainwater. Reducing the demand for treated mains water, the harvested water can be used garden watering, toilet flushing and clothes washing.
Pre-fabricated Component Chambers, Catchpits and Manholes
Intelligently engineered component chamber, manholes and catchpits are pre-fabricated by Polypipe’s highly skilled in-house fabrications department, offering custom-built designs to suit the needs of any project. The team are also available to fabricate specialist bends and fittings.

Ridgidrain is the UK’s leading twinwall drainage pipe. Available in diameters 100-600mm Ridgidrain is BBA, HAPAS and PADS approved. Polypipe also provide Landcoil to assist with excess water in farming and land management applications.
Polysewer and Ridgisewer offer the largest range of pipes and fittings for use in gravity sewers. The range offers robust, chemical and sewer gas resistance for both new and replacement gravity sewerage systems and has pipes available between 150-600mm in diameter. Polypipe delivers an innovative solution for £8m Darlington development
Polypipe has supplied a drainage and attenuation solution for the £8 million Haughton Road residential development in Darlington. The project saw Polypipe deliver a tailored, value engineered system to meet the specific requirements of the local water company, Northumbrian Water, working in conjunction with the main contractor Tolent Living and subcontractor Hewitson Limited.
The Haughton Road development project is the largest housing development in the area in recent history, and is being delivered by the Railway Housing Association in collaboration with contractor Tolent Living, groundworks subcontractor Hewitson Limited and designers Coast Consulting Engineers. The development will see 73 new rental homes built for local residents, which will incorporate the site’s historic engine shed, built in 1844. The Listed status building will be converted into mews-style homes, guaranteeing the future preservation and continued use of a historic building closely linked to the town’s industrial past.
The original specification for the drainage and attenuation on the development included a concrete system, however due to their strong existing relationship with Polypipe, Hewitson Limited asked the manufacturer to provide an alternative option.
Polypipe worked closely with Northumbrian Water to meet their specific requirements for the site and demonstrated the capabilities that a Ridgistorm-XL large diameter plastic pipe solution could deliver, in comparison to a traditional concrete system. Engaging in discussions with the full project team, Polypipe demonstrated that its ability to provide Ridgistorm-XL pipework in bespoke pipe lengths and stiffness classifications made it one of the most adaptable large diameter piping systems in the UK, and in this instance the ideal system to meet the project’s needs.
Polypipe’s proposed system used Ridgistorm-XL engineered thermoplastic large diameter pipes, with just under 12 metres of pipe supplied in a diameter of 900mm and a stiffness class of SN2, and 171 metres supplied in a diameter of 1,200mm to a stiffness class of SN2.8. The Ridgistorm-XL solution was laid under the road out of the residential site and will store surface water run-off, before controlling its release back into Northumbrian Water’s system at a measured rate.
The pipes were delivered with spigot and socket push-fit jointing, ensuring efficient installation on site. Polypipe’s Ridgistorm-XL is robust, reliable and long lasting, as well as being up to 94% lighter than concrete systems, making it easier and quicker to handle and install, further reducing installation time and cost.
In order to approve the system, Northumbrian Water required rocker and stub connectors to be incorporated, to join manholes to the main pipe lengths. Polypipe adapted to this request by providing additional lengths of Ridgistorm-XL pipe, cut to 1.25 metres. Polypipe then worked closely with the project team to reposition the manholes within the system design as needed, with the shorter lengths of pipe used as rocker and stub connectors to secure them into the main framework. Ridgistorm-XL manholes are modular, ready-to-install access points that can be integrated anywhere in the drainage network system. At the Haughton Road site, they will effectively control surface run-off flow and facilitate easy access for future inspection and maintenance.

Home protection enhanced as Polypipe delivers flood alleviation to Kidderminster
Polypipe has supplied a complete attenuation solution for the £1.3 million Kidderminster Linnet Rise Flood Alleviation Scheme.
The lack of capacity in the area’s existing highway drainage network placed many properties on the residential area of Linnet Rise at risk of flooding, with the consequences most recently seen in 2007, when thousands of pounds’ worth of damage was caused by a flood, following torrential rain.
The scheme was designed to ensure a collaborative approach to solving the area’s flooding issues by providing a SuDS system that would provide long-term defence with minimal intrusion to the existing space. Polypipe was approached due to its extensive track record of successfully delivering attenuation systems for developers and contractors. Working closely with contractor NMCNomenca and Severn Trent Water, Polypipe supplied a complete prefabricated solution using Polystorm geocellular tanks, together with pipework, manholes and catchpits all manufactured off-site. The solution would also allow the installers to negotiate the very tight parameters of the Linnet Rise site, where space to manoeuvre plant equipment would be a challenge.
The solution delivered by Polypipe and NMCNomenca retrospectively addressed the site’s drainage issues for the long term while keeping installation time and disruption to a minimum, showcasing the capabilities that Polypipe can offer when improving the standards of flood protection in heavily populated areas. Polypipe’s system was also fully adopted by Severn Trent Water.
The final design saw the installation of two Polystorm geocellular tanks at a depth of 3.2 metres, under two resident owned car parks on the Linnet Rise site, providing 366m3 and 479m3 of storage respectively. The tanks were formed using Polystorm cells, which boast a 95% void fill ratio. This solution maximised the tanks’ storage volume within the limited space available for an attenuation system on this compact housing estate. These tanks will safely store flood water in the event of surface water sewers reaching capacity following heavy downpours, before releasing water back into Severn Trent’s watercourse once the downpour has subsided.
The two tanks were laid at a 1 in 150 gradient across both length and width, to facilitate draindown to the primary inlet and outlet located in the bottom corner of the crates. This will ensure that any sediment entering the tank from the surface water sewer is flushed out through the same flow path. Three channels were also installed in each tank, to promote water flow dispersal throughout the geocellular crates and provide inspection points along the length of the tanks, which are accessible via six specialist access turrets located outside of the site’s car parking bays.
Polypipe’s gravity return design means that the two tanks fill and empty without using any pumps or valves and therefore, following installation, the system will cost nothing to run and require minimal future maintenance by Severn Trent Water.
Polypipe’s ability to design and manufacture pipework, manholes and catch pits off-site provided the perfect solution to the project’s limited working space and the need for quick installation. The supply of high-quality parts, designed to the project’s exact specification and delivered directly to site, meant that the system could be installed in a single day, reducing both contractor costs and disruption for local residents.
