Primers are materials applied as a preparatory coating to promote adhesion of subsequent layers of paint or coating. There are several types of primers available, including oil-based, water-based, and solvent-based primers. BS 5358 is a standard that specifies the requirements and test methods for primers used in the protection of iron and steel structures against corrosion.
