Secured by Design was established in 1989 and is the UK Police flagship security initiative which combines the principals of ‘designing out crime’ through physical security and layout across all realms of the built environment.

Fixed Lantern Rooflight
The Glazing Vision lantern rooflight is a contemporary take on the traditional glazed roof lantern, it is designed to provide maximum natural daylight and serve as an architectural feature rooflight. It is supplied with a thermally broken framework which is dual colour as standard RAL7015 outer / RAL9010 inner. The standard lantern is manufactured at a 45° pitch with the glass sections being bonded together to reduce visible framework. The ridge line of the lantern also features a glass to glass join. Fixed Octagonal Pyramid Rooflight
The Glazing Vision octagonal pyramid rooflight is designed to provide maximum natural daylight and serve as an architectural feature rooflight. It is supplied with a thermally broken framework which is dual colour as standard RAL7015 outer / RAL9010 inner. The Pitchglaze is a CE marked roof window designed to be installed in pitched tiled roof applications flush with the tiling line. Skydoor Hinged Access Rooflight
Hinged rooflight is designed for day to day access to your roof space, ideal for terrace areas on flat roofs. Operated by intelligent LED control switch, the unit will respond to both one touch and press and hold requests. Skydoor opens out to 87° at full travel by means of synchronised dual actuators but you can also stop the unit at any point mid travel which means it can be used as a natural ventilation rooflight too. Skyglide Sliding Rooflight
Skyglide is our entry level sliding rooflight, the sliding lid section is entirely self supporting and opens using telescopic cantilever rails hidden within the framework. The unit opens using a robust, precision engineered rack and pinion drive system which also incorporates a built in solenoid clutch to prevent the sliding section being forcibly back driven. Fully retracted, the Skyglide provides a 100% clear opening . Skyhatch Electric Rooflight
Skyhatch electric is an access unit primarily, opening to a maximum 80° at full travel and can be stopped at any point to serve as a natural ventilation rooflight. The extruded aluminium framework is thermally broken and supplied as standard in dual colour Qualicoat approved powder coat. Power is supplied by an external 24V 300W supply as standard and the rooflight is operated by the intelligent LED wall switch supplied. Dual lift twin mechanisms provide reliable and stable support for the lid section when fully open, the Skyhatch offers full connectivity to rain sensor, thermostat and Building Management Systems and is available with remote control. Skyhatch Manual Rooflight
Skyhatch manual is an entry level access rooflight and does not require any power, used where access to the roof space is less frequent and is commonly installed for maintenance access. Opens to a maximum 75° at full travel but unlike the electric version it cannot be partially opened so is not designed to act as a ventilation rooflight. Gas strut opening mechanisms feature calibrated spring assisted openings, grab handles are mechanically fixed to the frame itself for added strength and durability. For extra security and improved weather performance an all new multi point locking system has been developed so that the lid section is locked at either end of the rooflight. The extruded aluminium framework is thermally broken and supplied as standard in dual colour Qualicoat approved powder coat. Sliding Over Fixed Rooflight
Sliding over Fixed rooflight is usually split into two sections, with one sliding pane of glass moving over a fixed section. This configuration allows the maximum amount of light to be transmitted whilst opening up 50% of the overall footprint for ventilation. Power is transmitted through a twin drive rack and pinion system with large diameter carriage wheels and hard anodised tracks to provide smooth travel when in motion. Unit features a one way solenoid clutch and built in anti lifting mechanism so the sliding section cannot be forcibly back driven. Qualicoat approved polyester powder coated frame is supplied dual colour as standard and is thermally broken using 39 mm polyamide thermal breaks and closed cell PIR insulation. Improved thermal performance can be achieved by specifying triple glazing which is now a standard option. Sliding Over Roof Rooflight
Sliding over Roof type rooflights are designed for larger areas where there is sufficient unobstructed roof space for the sliding section. The glazed section slides as a single leaf and is supported by tracks on the roof itself in the open position. These form part of the framework and allow more scope in size and specification whilst maintaining the 100% clear opening. Manufactured using heat soak tested toughened low e glazing and are available in triple glazing for even better thermal performance. The Sliding Over Roof includes all of the main security features of the Sliding Over Fixed and is operated using the same rack and pinion drive mechanism with one way clutch system. All sliding rooflights can be supplied with remote control and connected to a rain sensor, thermostat and Building Management System. VisionVent Powered Operation Rooflight
The VisionVent is a hinged rooflight designed to provide natural ventilation whilst reducing internally visible operating mechanisms. The thermally broken framework is supplied dual colour as standard RAL7015 outer / RAL9010 inner. The VisionVent is available as a manual option with visible internal screw jack mechanism or it can be supplied with powered mechanisms hidden within the frame, these units being driven open using chain mechanisms or dual scissor hinges providing a more stable platform. X-Vent Rooflight
xvent (AOV) rooflight has been tested and certified to BS EN 12101-2:2003. On installation it is connected to the fire alarm system which if triggered will automatically open the unit to 140° for smoke ventilation. If connection to the fire alarm panel is lost it will automatically open and should the fire alarm system fail completely, the integrated thermostat will trigger the unit to fire position should the internal temperature reach 72°. When running off the battery the xvent will emit an audible signal and the LED control switch will flash Red. The xvent has dual functionality and can also be used day to day as a vent unit opening up to 45°. Glazing Vision’s xvent is available in two standard sizes providing internal clear openings of either 1m² or 1.5m² and can even be integrated into the Flushglaze system for larger roof glazing requirements. xvent can be supplied with a laminated inner pane which has been attack tested to LPS2081 Issue 1: 2015 and rated Secured by Design. Refurbishment and extension project utilise Flushglaze walk on rooflights to positively impact liveable space.

A new open plan arrangement in this Victorian terrace home has increased functionality and maximised daylight, using Glazing Vision’s fixed walk on rooflights.

Tasked with re-energising this family home in Crouch End, Mulroy Architects have introduced an abundance of light using walk on fixed rooflights transforming the centre of the property. The new open plan arrangement has increased functionality, maximised daylight and opened up views out onto the rear garden of this Victorian Terrace house.

The extension and full house renovation did away with the existing rear outrigger and dormer roof conversion that were well below current standards. The ground floor has been opened up and floor levels resolved to improve the liveable space, whilst maintaining the character and appearance throughout. A series of interlinked spaces have been designed to replace the heavily compartmentalised layout that had previously hindered the potential of the property with poor spatial qualities, uninspiring views and inadequate lighting.

One of the most impressive aspects of the development is the new kitchen housed in the rear ground extension. Granted under permitted development rights, the modern addition is walled with large areas of glazing allowing for an abundance of natural daylight, achieved with a combination of feature glazed doors and a large rooflight situated above the central kitchen island.

The rooflight itself has a party trick – Mulroy wanted to utilise the roof space above the kitchen as a terrace, but still include a rooflight as part of the scheme. A Glazing Vision walk on specification rooflight was detailed, meaning that the glazing forms part of the roof structure, and can be safely traversed by those using the terrace.

Having worked previously with Glazing Vision, the challenges of ensuring a flush finish and drainage with such a small pitch, were quickly muted through the experience and technical advice provided by Glazing Visions technical specification team. The 1140 x 3015 mm fixed walk-on rooflight was able to provide more than just the natural daylight that had been required, offering attractive views to the sky from within the plan due to the frameless design of the rooflight and maximising the usable space on the first-floor balcony for the clients.

Engineered by Glazing Vision with a 25.5mm clear laminate outer pane, 14mm Argon filled warm edge spacer cavity, and 6mm heat soak tested toughened inner pane, the walk on rooflight is designed to meet the future projected foot traffic upon them with uniform loadings of 1.5kN/m² and concentrated loadings of 2.0kN in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-1-1:2002.

Andrew Mulroy from Mulroy Architects explains “the client was very pleased with the rooflight and it delivered everything that was set out in the brief”.

Glazing Vision - Impressive Rooflights used for Church Renovation

Situated in leafy north Oxford, this beautiful church forms a peaceful sanctuary for its parish and locals. The recently built front extension creates a new threshold for the church, encompassing a large multipart Flushglaze fixed rooflight from Glazing Vision. The rooflight works to fill the entrance lobby with natural daylight and helps to create a lofty, open space with character.

Respecting History & Accommodating the Contemporary
Adrian James Architects were appointed to create this new front extension, a project that presented some difficulties. Building on the front of a listed and loved church is something that requires very careful consideration by multiple bodies, both statutory and corporeal. This said, the new addition doesn’t try and hide the curious historical anomaly of the brick west wall. Instead, it has been designed as if the church interior has continued to flow out of the entrance doors and into a unique and welcoming glazed entrance.

Key to the project was to create an area which would bring new life to the church and would help to draw in people from outside the building, whilst also providing iconic views of the church. Having previously worked with Glazing Vision on some large, private house projects, Adrian James Architects sought out their expertise in providing a feature rooflight which would be a main component within the new Narthex.

Maximising Daylight, Highlighting Stunning Features
A generously sized multipart Flushglaze rooflight, measuring 3922 x 2566mm, was chosen to flood the new narthex space with plenty of natural daylight during the day. The product not only works to draw people in from outside the building, but also draws visitors back out of the church via the narthex after ceremonies. Three smaller fixed Flushglaze rooflights were installed throughout this contemporary extension to help provide natural light into both the toilet and kitchen areas.

This new modular Flushglaze rooflight compliments the beauty of the church and provides a clear, frameless internal view of the new west gable window, emphasising the importance of the church as both a community and religious centre. Ryan Taylor of Adrian James Architects explains, “the finished result is excellent; installation of the rooflight was straightforward and the units appear seamless. The minimal detail is ideal from an architectural perspective.”

With the rooflight running between two existing buttresses, there were some complications as the architects learnt that standard kerb detail couldn’t be switched over to an abutment detail mid-run. However, with the advice of Glazing Vision, this was not difficult to resolve and helped to create a positive working relationship, once again, between both Adrian James Architects and Glazing Vision.

The new design has been positively welcomed by English Heritage, the planners, the diocese, the parish and the locals.
