Main Roofing Systems:

Adhered Roofs:

An adhered system will typically consist of a structural deck, adhered vapour control layer, adhered or mechanically fastened thermal insulation and adhered Sarnafil membrane.

Mechanically Fastened:

Mechanically fastened systems are suitable for both new and refurbishment projects of any size, providing cost efficient roofing systems for exposed applications.

Green Roofs:

Green roof systems are specified for a variety of reasons, principally to manage incident rainfall or to replace the biodiverse footprint that construction destroys; creating habitat for flora and fauna. But green roofs provide a wide variety of additional benefits including amenity, thermal mass, pollution reduction, natural cooling and aesthetics.

Ballasted Roofs:

A ballasted roof is one where the roofing membrane is restrained by means of either gravel or paving slabs. Green roofs are also classed as ballasted roofs but are covered in a specific section within this site.

Sika SolaRoof Is a 20 year guaranteed Solar Roof System based on an engineered non penetrative and lightweight mounting system the Sika SolarMount-1. Sika SolarMount-1 is an aerodynamic, lightweight mounting system for the installation of rigid Photovoltaic (PV) panels to flat roofs.

Self adhered membranes Sarnafil G 410 ELF SA is a self adhered hot air weldable roof membrane that combines all the traditional and proven advantages of a Sarnafil membrane with fast and easy installation thanks to a strong self adhered fixing attachment method. Cutting installation times by up to 50 per cent with no need for the use of adhesives on site Sarnafil Self Adhered is the quick, simple solution for installers, specifiers and building owners.

Sika Sarnafil - Is your green roof as sustainable as you think?

December 2022

Sarah Peake, Sika UK Sustainability Manager, encourages specifiers to be mindful of the entire roof build-up when trying to achieve a totally sustainable system.

Is your green roof as sustainable as you think?

Green roofs are an innovative sustainable solution for forward-thinking building owners, architects and specifiers, but even their exceptional sustainability credentials can be improved upon. When looking for the most environmentally-friendly roofing system possible, you should be asking yourself the question: is your green roof system as eco-friendly as it could be?

With companies striving to meet Net Zero targets and reduce carbon emissions, every aspect of a business – including the buildings and facilities it operates within – are being analysed from top to bottom in terms of sustainability and carbon output. The expectations we have of sustainable roofing systems are high, as building owners look to reduce their environmental impact and move towards a greener, eco-friendly future.

A green roof is a natural solution to an urban problem of heat islands, flooding and carbon emissions: at this stage, the benefits and sustainability credentials of green roofs are well documented and widely known. The entire roof build-up, however, has not received the same scrutiny. When we think of green roofs, it’s the uppermost layer of vegetation that comes to mind. But there is a whole system lying beneath that comprises the entire roof, from structural support and insulation to the waterproofing membrane.

If these components are not as environmentally friendly as the vegetative layer, is it truly a sustainable roofing system? Green roofs require a waterproofing membrane that acts as a dual-barrier; protecting the building against both water and root damage. This roofing membrane is an essential component of the roof build-up, and a green roof would not be viable without it. It seems clear, then, that to achieve a truly sustainable roof build-up, specifiers and architects need to ensure that this roofing membrane, which is integral for all green roofs, is as environmentally friendly as the system that sits above it.

Waterproofing system for a green terrace and roof

Various technologies can be utilised in cohesion with a green roof, but it’s a single ply membrane, Sarnafil® Advanced Technology, that offers a total sustainability package when used in conjunction with a green roof system. Market-leading roofing manufacturer Sika developed this technology with sustainability in mind, and it is the first and only single ply roofing membrane in the UK to meet the strict criteria of a Cradle to Cradle® Silver Certification – a globally trusted stamp of approval.

A Cradle to Cradle Certification is an asset for specifiers, architects and building owners, as it offers assurances from a third-party organisation that a product is sustainable. Sustainability can appear difficult to measure, but Cradle to Cradle provides a quantifiable method of analysis. The evaluation process works by stringent testing in five separate categories: Material Health, Material Reutilisation, Renewable Energy Use, Water Stewardship, and Social Fairness. Only products that excel in all five will be awarded a Cradle to Cradle Certification, establishing an incredibly high bar for manufacturers.

By combining two sustainable technologies into a single total roofing package, you will be one step closer to reaching Net Zero targets and aligning with United Nations Sustainability Goals, while also building a roofing system that is reliable in practical terms, lasting for decades. Most importantly, you can be confident that the roofing system you have installed has unmatched sustainability credentials, and become part of a growing movement to prioritise environmental wellbeing in the construction industry.

SIKA DEMONSTRATES EXTENSIVE FIRE SAFETY COMPLIANCE

March 2022

SIKA DEMONSTRATES EXTENSIVE FIRE SAFETY COMPLIANCE USING EXTENDED APPLICATION ASSESSMENTS, AS BROOF(T4) IS CONFIRMED FOR ALL SARNAFIL SINGLE PLY SYSTEMS

Market-leading roofing manufacturer Sika has now completed Extended Application Assessments, testing to CEN/TS 1187:2012 Test method 4 for the entire Sika Sarnafil range of PVC single ply membranes. Subsequently, the most common Sika Sarnafil roof systems are now all classified under BSEN 13501-5 as BROOF(t4).

Working closely with independent global fire safety testing, inspection and certification company Warringtonfire – part of the Element Materials Technology Group – Sika has undertaken significant investment to attain the BROOF(t4) classification across all PVC membrane systems. This covers a range of permutations, including membrane type, thickness of PIR insulation, up to a 70-degree pitch and on any structural substrate.

A project spanning over two years’ work, Sika has invested a substantial amount of time and resource, utilising the EXAP standard CEN/TS16459, which is available as a means of covering ranges of system permutations.

Dean Grady, project leader and Senior Product Engineer at Sika, comments on why Sika has opted to invest in this type of testing: “The market has become acutely aware of fire safety and it is looking to industry leaders to help. We have seen for a while now that specifiers, architects, clients and building control are increasingly insisting on fire test certificates that directly reflect the exact system being installed. As it is very problematic to test every single permutation of a system, when you factor in multiple substrate types, insulation thickness and membrane type/thicknesses, EXAP testing through an independent body allows us to cover most variations of the system being installed. With Sika Sarnafil roof systems classified as BROOF(t4), we’re able to demonstrate and facilitate regulatory compliance for fire safety and satisfy current market demand.”

"Having this comprehensive BROOF(t4) classification, which indicates the highest external fire performance for roofs, means that specifiers and other stakeholders can use Sika Sarnafil on their roofing projects with a very high degree of confidence, assured that they’re complying with fire regulations."
Dean Grady, project leader and Senior Product Engineer at Sika

The only people who are permitted to undertake any degree of desktop/extrapolation studies now are accredited, independent fire test houses. This clearly removes the ability for anyone else to interpret or extrapolate the fire test data that may have been practiced in the past.

“We are not offering a view, we are offering wide-ranging test data and evidence that covers most permutations and situations – all with third-party verification, which is key. It’s a clear way forward in terms of mitigating roof fire risk and helping support those with the heavy responsibility of ensuring people’s safety,” he adds.

The project involved taking a huge existing body of fire testing reports into consideration and conducting further, more extensive physical testing. On completion of the programme, Sika now has independent test reports readily available on request.

With plans to extend the initiative across the entire Sika roofing range, Sika looks forward to increasing the confidence and reassurance specifiers are looking for and strengthening its position as an expert and leader in testing and compliance.
