Suppliers of: Aperam Stainless Steel Roofing Cladding stainless Steel Facades rainscreens.
Aperam manufacture stainless steel roofing and cladding that offers the ultimate combination of visual style, high performance, sustainability and suitability for diverse building styles. The recent introduction of ferritic stainless steel and consequent removal of nickel has both stabilised price and removed the high susceptibility to commodity driven price volatility and fluctuation allowing Aperam stainless steel roofing and cladding to be increasingly cost effective.
Aperam Stainless steel roofing and cladding offers scope for use in new build, refurbishment and heritage projects. The increased incidents of metal theft, especially of copper and lead have also initiated the endorsement by English Heritage of the Aperam UGINOX PATINA K44 terne-coated stainless steel roofing as an alternative to lead or copper roofing. Acceptance for heritage projects stems principally from the availability of systems which weather quickly to take on the desired appearance of lead together with fast installation solutions.
The Advantages of Aperam Stainless Steel
There are many other surfaces delivering a wide variety of shade, texture and colour. Aperam stainless steel is light in weight, highly durable and offers exceptional corrosion resistance even in aggressive environments. Excellent mechanical strength enables it to be used at thinner gauges than most other metals used for façade and roofing systems. The strength and subsequent weight reduction delivers surprising cost benefits. Though the cost per tonne is high by comparison to other metals, the reduced weight is reflected in a correspondingly low cost per square metre.
Stainless steel has a very low coefficient of expansion but has high tensile and yield strengths. This means that single tray lengths of up to 20 metres can be used. Detailing work and on site fabrication including soldering is straightforward, even at very low temperatures. Stainless steel is also not susceptible to cold working fatique.
For contemporary building facades and roofs, Aperam surfaces retain their appearance for decades but present none of the attendant oxide corrosion issues associated with many other metals.
some of our work includes:
- Retail developments such as marks and Spencer Glasgow Fort, Birmingham Bullring and John Lewis Leicester
- Healthcare projects such as the South Liverpool NHS Health Centre

Aperam Stainless Steel Roofing
Aperam stainless steel roofing systems offer scope for use at very low pitches and are suitable for warm and cold roof designs, including ‘compact’ warm roofs. Installed using normal metal fabrication equipment, they offer an exceptional standard of colour retention, with UGINOX PATINA K44 also providing the matt grey characteristics of lead. In addition to providing excellent thermal and acoustic properties stainless steel roofing also requires no underside ventilation. Accompanying the high corrosion resistance is a similarly high performance in relation to thermal shock and an AA-rated resistance to fire.
Aperam Stainless Steel Facades
Aperam façade systems offer scope to define a building’s visual aesthetic. The style is highly distinctive and in addition to complementing a wide variety of timber, masonry and glazing systems can be used to make a major contribution to high BREEAM performance. Standing seam, interlocking panel, cassette and ribbed cladding systems are available in addition to vertical and horizontal rises. The neat delineation of interlocking cladding panels and shingles can be used to create square, rectangular and diamond shapes while cassettes can be perforated or stamped for additional refinement. Assembly can be undertaken either on or off-site using standard tools.
Aperam UK projects span sectors including health, education, leisure, retail, heritage and commercial. They include:-
The Manchester headquarters of BDP Architects
Retail developments such as The Birmingham Bullring and John Lewis stores
The Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge
Education projects such as Bishop Wordsworth School, Salisbury, Milton of Leys Primary School, Inverness and Fordham University Colchester
Leisure and Conference facilities at Crewe Hall Hotel, Staffordshire
Stainless Steel Economics and Sustainability
Stainless steel is fully recyclable and does not leach compounds or oxides that might contaminate water, soil or discolour other building materials. Indeed the harvesting of rain water is a regular requirement for use in grey-water applications or irrigation.
Maintenance requirements are minimal and even graffiti presents no major cleaning difficulties. Stainless steel is infinitely recyclable and therefore ideally suited within the construction sector where recycling levels are high. Overall, its inherent durability and long design life have led to it being classed as a highly sustainable green construction material.
UGINOX PATINE K44 is a bi-stabilized ferritic stainless steel with an electro-tinned coating on both sides that weathers over time, acquiring a natural matt patina akin to the traditional aesthetic of lead.
Aperam stainless steel surface finishes include:-
UGINOX TOP A permanent and durable matt finish
UGINOX PATINE K44 An electro-tinned coating on both sides that weathers over time, and becomes grey with a matt finish.

Aperam stainless steel in dramatic church transformation
Aperam stainless steel in dramatic church transformation
For the £5m restoration of Grade II-listed St Barnabas Church in Erdington architects Brownhill Hayward Brown specified a standing seam system across the entire roof span using Aperam UGINOX Top stainless steel. This takes on the matt grey appearance and traditional aesthetic of aged lead sheet through natural patination and is approved by English Heritage for use where there is a continuing risk of metal theft.
The church had been destroyed by fire in late 2007 as a result of an arson attack, with only the tower and perimeter walls left standing. The award winning design provides a sweeping stainless steel roof which ‘fuses’ a modern glass-fronted extension with the extensively restored Victorian structure. This provides a modern twist in the creation of a place of worship fit for the 21st century and a prime example of how modern architecture and good conservation practice can be integrated into a historically important ecclesiastical setting.
STAINLESS STEEL DELIVERS VALUE
STAINLESS STEEL DELIVERS VALUE
Stainless steel offers lifetime performance by virtue of its high corrosion resistance.
Strong mechanical properties mean that relatively thin material cross sections can be used, which in turn reduce the total metal weight delivering cost benefits.
Stainless steel exterior products provide architects design freedom allowing complex forms to be produced. Long coils and sheets provide ease of processing and installation. Additional advantages are low weight per square metre and ease of soldering with high performance levels at low temperatures. These materials encourage creativity and combine well with glass, wood and stone. Stainless steel is a material of choice, used for many years as a sustainable product, infinitely recyclable with a near 100% recovery rate.
Stainless steel is ideally suited to building applications exposed to adverse weather conditions: roofs, facades, rainwater systems and domestic water pipes.
As a leading worldwide producer, Aperam has developed a stunning range of surface finishes, textures, patterns and even colours. For example, UGINOX Patina, weathers to a soft grey patina, is commonly and regularly specified on new and refurbished buildings.
