Grasscrete - Grass Paving System.

Reinforced grassed paving systems tend to be referred to in a number of different ways, including grass pavers, reinforced grass, turf pavers or even on very own Grasscrete system. Each of these terms can often be confusingly used as a generic reference for all available systems.

Here at Grass Concrete Limited we feel that we have the solution to that problem. Firstly we have the complete range of systems whether it be in concrete, plastic or geo-fabric system. Then we have a ’tell it as it is’ approach to our customers. This comes with technical design assistance and for UK projects an installation service by our own Contracts Division. Our grass reinforcement products include:

  • grasscrete - A cast on site cellular reinforced concrete system, not to be confused with cellular concrete pavers. Grasscrete is load bearing up for to 40 tonnes gross vehicle weight, resists differential settlement and provides excellant drainage. Grasscrete is also widely installed for water engineering projects including reservoirs, spillways and water erosion control projects.
  • grassblock - Ideal for not only grass reinforced paving but also slope protection. A advanced design for a safe walking platform and lower traffic vibration.
  • grassroad - A licensed plastic paving system for a lower visual impact and suitable for occasional use such as overspill car parks. Available in in green and black.
  • grasskerb - A dry fix HDPE  kerb edge solution. Available as a 45mm deep for lawns and roofing applications and a heavier duty 60mm unit for grassblock applications.

Retaining Walls - The Betoconcept Range.

The Betoconcept Range is a flexible mass gravity earth retaining walling system, a Dry-Build solution for earth retention or noise absorption.

Betoconcept interlocking concrete units enable a quick and easy construction process with a choice of plantable or stone finished faces, together with a range of colours. Our ranges of retaining wall blocks are available for retaining slopes up to 22m high and include:

  • betoflor  Hollow low height dry build interlocking concrete block walling for plants
  • betoatlas Dry build interlocking retaining wall block for up to 10.6 metres high in a hollow plantable format
  • betotitan A patented retaining wall block for heights of up to 22 metres. Dry build and plantable available in a range of colours

Green Roofing

Grassroof is a simple green roof system that can be used for either Extensive or Intensive, new or retro-fit flat roof green roofing projects.

Grasscrete’s green roofing is available as two types. In the GRF/1 type, gaps in the paving layer is simply filled with a lightweight aggregate filter media and for the GRF/2 type paver it is bonded to the geotextile. By bonding to the geotextile the soil is held in place whilst still allowing rainwater to be drained off into a rainwater harvesting system. Grassroof system is lightweight and also provides improved thermal insulation.

The Binwall Range - Demountable Bunker Walling System

Binwall is a large format, dry build, demountable concrete walling system that is ideal bin-store bunker walling system. Binwall makes a great choice for Quarries, Waste Transfer Stations, Re-cycling Plants, Bulk Storage Yards etc.

Grass Concrete Sponsors Ryedale Grand Prix

Wakefield based Grass Concrete are once again the main sponsors of one of the biggest events in British cycling, the Ryedale Grand Prix, hosted at Ampleforth Abbey on Sunday 6th August, part of the British Cycling | HSBC UK Grand Prix Road Series.

Grass Concrete has been sponsoring the Ryedale since its inception in 2005 and has seen the event grow to a showcase sporting event for Yorkshire. The event and location has proved so popular that it’s been award the privilege of doubling as the National Road Race Championships on three occasions, in 2005, 2008 and 2012.

Incorporating both a men’s and women’s event, the 58-mile Women’s National Road Series kicks-off first at 9.30am. As part of "a continuing commitment to developing women's racing", the organisers say that there will once again be equal prize money for the Women's and Men's Grand Prix, which itself takes to the rolling roads around Ampleforth at 2.00pm, this time for a battle over 94 miles.

The event is once again promoted by British Cycling's Yorkshire Region, with British Cycling's President Bob Howden OBE organising the races. Grass Concrete Limited, will promote their Worldwide brand Grasscrete in the sponsorship and are once again joined by Ryedale District Council who continue to support the event that bears their name

GROWING CONCERNS – the key issues for grass reinforcement

With increased demand for grass paving to driveways, access roads and parking for both commercial and domestic applications, there are certain aspects of both ground conditions and utilisation that all building professionals should consider………..

Today’s wide choice of grass paving systems means that builders now have a wide choice of products, together it seems with an equally wide range of performance and sustainability claims. Without the clear guidelines of an industry standard it could be possible to end up with a product that might be fine in the short term, but will not stand the test of time, and in turn, not achieve any degree of sustainability.

Take for example a car park in daily use; “will the grass cover and then the structure stand up to that sort of regime?” If the application is to slopes “will it function as an armouring layer and will it offer grip?” These are the sort of challenging questions that that should be asked to ensure a correct specification.

FIT FOR PURPOSE
This perhaps leads onto another question, the appropriate use of grass paving. With more than 40 years of industry experience, the Grass Concrete policy is to guide our clients to whichever system is most appropriate to their need be it insitu concrete, pre-cast concrete or plastic systems, including stating the case where we feel there is inappropriate uses for a particular system.

It's a growing concern to us that plastic systems might be selected in areas where stronger reinforcement with regular trafficking is essential. Grass Concrete supply all varieties of systems; Grasscrete is cast-on site, precast concrete blocks available as Grassblock via builders merchants, Reinforced plastic system includes Grassroad and Grasskerb.

When considering a design there are a few “golden rules” that can help the process if applied as a checklist. “The paving will be rarely used” is a fairly common statement. Think however about the potential for unplanned heavy use such as from refuse and skip vehicles or regularly trafficked areas of a drive way.

WEIGHT LOAD IMPACT
In most instances ground reinforcement failure often stems from either an inability to accept weight load or an issue of waterlogging causing loss of grass and weakened support; with in some cases each of these problems being evident.

With a long established history of installations we are uniquely placed to work closely with engineers and architects alike to recommend appropriate systems – sometimes in combination – where certain areas can be effectively maintained with plastic, and other areas more vulnerable to traffic potential are essential for concrete alternatives.

GROUND CONDITIONS
Critical to performance will be the below ground conditions. Most circumstances will see a sub-base depth of 150mm as being sufficient, this should however be proportionately increased where CBR values of 4% or less are encountered. Care should also be taken in specifying the type of sub-base, DOT type 3 materials mion but it provides a greater consistency both in grading and in availability.

Given the demands for Sustainable Urban Drainage grass reinforced systems can permeate at up to 90% the rate of natural grass a safe lag time can be achieved. Lag time is beneficial in the prevention of flooding and can be extended by introducing an underlying drainage blanket across the full extent of the paved area. Grasscrete can and does combine with proprietary forms of sub-ground attenuation.
