Sensazone improves hygiene and water management in healthcare washrooms

Encouraging high standards of hand hygiene is considered one of the most important actions that healthcare facilities can take in the ongoing battle against cross-contamination and cross-infection.

This is a particular challenge in the communal washroom areas which are in use 24 hours a day by a variety of users - staff, patients and visitors. Here, the risk of infection being spread from hand to surface contact or by unhygienic practice and behaviour is constantly high.

Alongside this there is a need for healthcare managers to demonstrate exceptional budget responsibility in their use of public funds and to minimise the environmental impact of their facilities.

Sensazone, from water management experts Cistermiser, is a system which has been designed as a simple yet effective way of controlling the water supply and lowering energy usage, while maintaining safe, hygienic washroom environments.

Visitors to the washroom are detected by infrared sensors which then automatically switch on the lights and ventilation as well as the water supply. An ambient light sensor feature turns on the lights only when natural light levels are too low, again to lower energy usage.

For large healthcare facilities with two to three washrooms on each floor (gents, ladies and disabled), the ability of such systems to control individual washrooms across different floors - simply switching the facilities on and off remotely - can be a major selling point.
