Elevated Pathways: Safer, Smarter Bridge Design with MMA Architectural Systems

August 2025

At MMA Architectural Systems, we are the exclusive UK partner of Jakob Rope Systems, supplying high-quality stainless steel wire ropes, rods, and mesh systems that bring together strength, flexibility, and design excellence. We’re dedicated to delivering safe, sustainable, and visually elegant solutions for elevated walkways and bridges throughout the UK.

Whether it’s a city landmark, river crossing, or part of vital infrastructure, architects and engineers choose our systems for their durability, clean aesthetics, and ease of installation. Below are a few standout projects that showcase how we help shape better-connected, safer environments.
Stockport Interchange

At Stockport Interchange, we supplied and installed our spectral black stainless steel Webnet balustrades. These were selected for their strength, flexibility, and subtle visual presence.

The Stockport Ramp is more than just a striking architectural feature. It’s a key pedestrian and cyclist route, linking the interchange with the wider town centre. By improving access and encouraging walking and cycling, it supports healthier lifestyles and active travel, helping reduce traffic on the roads.

Given the high footfall and importance of safety, it was crucial to use materials that would stand the test of time while also blending seamlessly with the surrounding design. Our Webnet system met all these needs, providing robust safety features while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.

Ely Bypass

On the Ely Bypass pedestrian and cyclist bridge, we supplied over 270 square metres of Jakob Webnet mesh, pre-installed into a combination of curved and rectangular frames.

One of the unique advantages of the Webnet frame system is its ability to be shaped into curves without compromising strength – making it the perfect choice for matching the shape of the bridge. The frames were made to measure, allowing for fast and efficient installation on site.

With high visibility and light transmission, the Webnet balustrading ensures uninterrupted views of the River Great Ouse and Ely Cathedral, offering both safety and a sense of openness. The result is a secure, long-lasting system that fits beautifully into the landscape.

Brentford Lock West

As part of the Brentford Lock West redevelopment, which is transforming the local area with high-quality public spaces, a new pedestrian bridge was built to span a historic waterway.

We designed and installed a bespoke Webnet balustrade using 1.5mm stainless steel rope with a 30mm mesh size. This was chosen for its sleek appearance and excellent safety performance. To enhance strength and stability, 8mm supporting ropes were also integrated into the structure.

Combining engineering precision with architectural design, this beautifully designed bridge not only respects the heritage of the site, but also meets the modern demands for safety and design.

Bridge and Elevated Walkway Balustrades

Across the UK, our made-to-measure balustrade systems are being used on bridges, footpaths, overpasses and more. By combining Jakob Webnet mesh with stainless steel posts and fittings, our systems provide strong fall protection without bulky rails or visual obstruction. This is ideal for a clean, minimal look that works in both contemporary and traditional settings.
