ION Glass - Frameless Glass balustrades for a mezzanine floor

March 2025

When space is at premium, installing a mezzanine floor makes use of high ceiling spaces ....bespoke glass balustrades and screens ensure you retain light and style.

A mezzanine floor provides additional space, especially where the footprint of the building is limited and the ceiling spaces are high – a common situation in many heritage buildings and churches.

Care must be taken to ensure the outcome doesn't restrict the flow of light, the beauty of stained glass windows or create a heavy and oppressive result. The use of bespoke structural glass balustrades, with or without a handrail, can provide a beautiful and contemporary result in keeping with the design intent of the project.

Check out these impressive Ion Glass projects:
A frameless curved glass balustrade encloses the mezzanine floor at the top of a Martello Tower near Folkestone, ensuring the owners can enjoy uninterrupted views of the South Coast. The installation provides a seamless interface between curved and straight glass with a combination of bolt fixed and channel set panels.

A stylish barn conversion has two separate mezzanine floors accessed by a spiral staircase and linked by a concrete bridge. Each individually manufactured glass panel is bolt fixed to stand off the face of the concrete and designed to line up perfectly from the curve of the stairs, across the bridge and around the original wooden beams of the barn.

Converting an ancient church into a wellness centre in Ipswich involved significantly increasing the space by building a mezzanine floor to accommodate a series of meeting rooms. Bespoke glass panels set into the original arches of the church provide maximum natural light for new rooms, with an uninterrupted view of the nave below.
