Cwt-y-Bugail Quarry Secures Future of Slate Production

Welsh Slate has secured extended planning permission for its historic Cwt-y-Bugail quarry in North Wales. The decision, approved on 24 June 2024 by Gwynedd Council, allows the quarry to continue operations until 2048.

Previously set to expire in December, the extended permission ensures the continued extraction of valuable slate reserves from the site. This not only safeguards jobs in the local community but also allows Welsh Slate to meet the ongoing demand for this traditional architectural, hard landscaping and roofing material.

Cwt-y-Bugail boasts a rich history, dating back to the 1840s. It even played a secret role during World War II when its caverns housed priceless works of art for safekeeping. The extended planning permission offers an opportunity to further explore and record this historical aspect of the quarry.
