ION Glass - How to link an old house to a new extension!

May 2024

The challenge
Linking older or heritage buildings with a modern extension can cause a number of problems: current building techniques are very different from those used in the past and some heritage organisations and planners often stipulate that there should be a visual separation between old and new.
The solution
These bespoke structural glass linkways built by Ion Glass create an indirect interface between buildings of different ages and styles, providing a visual divide. A glass linkway will allow for some movement between two buildings of different ages and structure.

A linkway can be constructed from channel set glass panels with minimal footings, overcoming issues relating to disparate foundations and building techniques
Specifying either single or double glazing allows a choice between a simple weather resistant linkway or an integral element of the building, fully compliant with heat loss requirements
Use of structural glass fins or beams can achieve a minimal result without visible fixings
Ion Glass technicians will assist with design and specification to ensure the optimum result for you or your client

An L-shaped glass link was designed and installed to connect two former farm buildings in an impressive Grade II listed barn conversion. The link consists of double-glazed panels, making it an integral part of this luxurious new home.
This suspended glass linkway connects the main heritage home to a new master bedroom suite built at a different level. Use of a glass floor ensures there' s no impact on light flow to the walkway beneath.
A traditional converted oast house is linked to a modern extension with a frameless double-glazed linkway, installed as an integral part of the building the glass link meets all heat loss requirements
The passageway between the house and the garage on this modern property was previously a draughty wind tunnel. Enclosing it with a glass linkway has created a weatherproof space without the need for footings.
The expert team at Ion Glass will take your bespoke design from concept to reality, providing technical advice and drawings to ensure your linkway meets all criteria before our fully trained and experienced installation teams achieve optimum results on site.
