Kawneer Architecture Becomes A Driving Force For Progress In Gloucester
VISION
In the construction sector, success is about taking calculated risks and seeing opportunities even when the obstacles seem insurmountable. The reward is the creation of vibrant facilities and community zones that can push communities to a better future and Gloucester recently witnessed this kind of driving force. Gloucestershire County Council worked with ADP Architecture and Kier Construction on a new state-of-the-art 3-storey multi-purpose facility which includes two GP surgeries to serve 18,000 patients, a pharmacy, office space and parking facilities. The transformation demanded £15 million in investments that utilised some of the most modern aluminium solutions available on the market.
TRANSFORMATION
To provide optimum weather and thermal performance and to maximise the building’s energy efficiency, ADP Architecture specified a range of aluminium products from Kawneer, installed by approved specialist subcontractor Norman & Underwood. The building’s façade features Kawneer’s AA®100 curtain wall system while AA®190 TB severe-duty doors were specified to handle the high volume of people entering and leaving the building. These were complemented by Kawneer’s AA®720 casement windows with louvreshields which provide both ventilation and fall protection. As the construction is a gateway to the city’s commercial area, the aesthetics were also paramount.
REALISATION
The project was designed in a unique way to create a building that, despite being multipurpose, is also organic and cohesive and will be followed by the renovation of the surrounding areas, with the construction of affordable houses and student accommodation. Gloucestershire County Council, Kier Construction and ADP Architecture’s goal is to create a sustainable, energy-efficient zone with a dynamic mix of buildings. Thanks to the architects’ innovative approach and the many advantages of Kawneer’s products, the Quayside neighbourhood is now a city landmark and lively community.
The project was shortlisted in the Construction Excellence South West Awards 2022, receiving nominations in two categories; “Building Project of the Year” and “Integration & Collaborative Working Award”.
