Bridge Balustrading on Ely Southern Bypass, Cambridgeshire
Curved Webnet Frames for Bridge Balustrade

Stainless steel safety solutions provider MMA Architectural Systems has supplied Jakob Webnet frames for bridge balustrading on a pedestrian and cyclist path on the side of a bypass in Ely. Suppling over 270m² of Jakob Webnet wire mesh ready installed onto a mixture of 136 curved and rectangular frames, they were made to measure for quick installation on site.

Balustrading on Bridge with Jakob Webnet Frames

The Ely Southern Bypass was designed to address traffic congestion issues within the city, and the addition of an accompanying pedestrian and cycle path was suggested to make the new bypass accessible to all. The positioning of the pedestrian and cycle path offers new views of Ely Cathedral, and provides a safe crossing point over the River Great Ouse and two railway lines.

With the safety of those using the new bridge in mind, it was crucial that the specified bridge balustrading was secure enough to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe. Jakob stainless steel Webnet wire mesh frames were specified due to their known strength, durability and weather-resistant qualities, in addition to the extensive technical and engineering support that MMA Architectural Systems and partners Jakob Rope Systems could offer during the design stage. To ensure the bridge balustrade met the British Standard for road restraint systems (PD CEN/TR 16949:2016), extensive testing was carried out and an engineering report was provided by Jakob Rope Systems to prove that Jakob Webnet frames met the required standard.

Where Jakob Webnet frames have the ability to be curved without impacting the strength of the frame, they were a great choice for the balustrading as this meant they could be manufactured to a precise radius to match the curvature of the bridge’s design. In addition to this, more than 90% of light can be transmitted through Webnet frames, meaning that the bridge balustrade does not obstruct the views of the Great River Ouse or Ely Cathedral. Providing security whilst still looking aesthetically pleasing, the balustrading on the path will keep people safe for years to come.
