A historical bridge in Exeter has been extended to create a new suspended path for pedestrians and cyclists, with the extension designed to reflect and compliment the bridge’s original design. Jakob Webnet wire mesh was chosen to be installed as balustrading infill for the footbridge to provide complete safety.

MMA Architectural Systems were involved during the design process, working on the project for several years before it came to fruition. The structure of the new path is flexible, therefore a material that would not part and create gaps whilst flexing was crucial, to ensure nothing could fall off the path between the gaps. This is where Jakob’s Webnet wire mesh system provided the perfect choice. Manufactured from stainless steel wire ropes that are woven together to create a durable yet flexible net, when the bridge flexes during use by pedestrians and cyclists, the Webnet mesh can stretch to accommodate the movement – without impacting on the strength and resilience of the net, and whilst still fully closing the balustrade gaps.

In addition to supplying the Webnet and wire ropes for the balustrade infill on the bridge, MMA Architectural Systems also installed the materials. Careful planning was needed for this project as the bridge is situated over a river and next to a live road. MMA’s project manager, operations manager, health and safety co-ordinator and lead installers worked together to assess the site and executed a detailed installation plan to keep the team safe and subsequently delivered the project safely and successfully.
The finished project looks fantastic, providing safe and easy access across the river for pedestrians and cyclists.
