Chobham Manor waterproofed with 14,000 m2 of ALSAN PMMA

August 2022

Nestled between parklands, at a mere stone’s throw from Lea Valley and Hackney Marshes, and in the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with its world-class sporting facilities, an incredible new neighbourhood is arising. Chobham Manor is the first of five new developments to be built in this history-rich area in Stratford, east London. 6,800 new homes will be constructed in total over the next 20 years, along with health centres and multi-purpose community spaces. SOPREMA provided the waterproofing solution and insulation materials for Chobham Manor, as well as collaborating closely from the design stage onwards with Taylor Wimpey, one of the top-five housebuilders in the UK, and SOPREMA-approved contractor Skyler Contracting.

Chobham Manor is an ambitious new build project consisting of 859 residential units: townhouses, mews-style properties, maisonettes, town houses with three or more bedrooms, and terraced apartments – with 75% designed for families and 35% as affordable homes. Just like London City Island , this development forms an entire community, offering residents everything they need, from community facilities, bars and shops to a landscaped central green play space for children and other open areas. Chobham Manor has an excellent connection to central London and Westfield Stratford City, which houses another 250 shops. While not yet complete, the site has already received numerous awards, including the Mayor’s Prize at the 2019 New London Architecture awards and a WhatHouse? Bronze Award for Best Partnership Scheme.

ALSAN waterproofing and XPS insulation

SOPREMA gained the trust of all the parties involved thanks to the solution we proposed, the level of service we could offer, the fact that they would be dealing directly with the manufacturer of the products, and because we had everything they needed right in stock. We provided advice – solving some issues with the substrate and helping to properly prepare it – technical input, regular site inspections, and full reports by our technicians. The system installed came from the ALSAN PMMA range, which was used to waterproof everything from podiums and upstands to terrace areas, balconies and roof areas.

We used SOPRA XPS inverted insulation wherever we could while remaining BROOF(t4) compliant. Green roofs were installed, which for this project turned out to be the more cost-effective solution. Some Chobham Manor homes also incorporate solar panels. They are installed on pedestals, meaning they don’t penetrate the waterproofing system at all.
Chobham Manor: to be continued

SOPREMA got involved in Chobham Manor in 2019, and the project is currently in phase four. Upon completion, the buildings on the site will contain 14,000 square metres of ALSAN PMMA and SOPREMA XPS insulation.
