Good Directions - Slate Clock

March 2022

Good Directions Ltd is over-joyed to be able to present this bespoke 1000mm clock which was manufactured all in house and proudly supplied to ‘Spuntini La Vita’ a new restaurant in Glasgow. Working with Burns Interior Design Ltd this design was inspired by another clock which the customer wanted to replicate as they thought it would make a stunning feature and talking point in their new restaurant.

Using out water jet cutter, we were able to cut this 25mm Riven Slate with ease and into the desired and correct shape for this dial. As well as cutting this piece of slate to size on our water jet, thanks to the accuracy and precision of the machine, we were also able to add a chamfered edge to the dial. The plus side to using Riven slate is that it does not have a smooth finish like most slate, instead it retains its natural stone aesthetic and texture for a more interesting finish.

Once the dial was cut and ready, we proceeded to make the chapters. The chapters for this clock were traditional Roman numerals and were firstly cut out of PVC on our CNC router into the unique and bespoke design featured here. Once they were cut, they were made into silicone moulds and then cast in resin, which formed the sturdy and robust numerals ready to be attached to the dial itself via screws. Once all the moulds were produced and manufactured; the chapters were hand finished in 23 ½ carat gold leaf and mounted onto the dial.

The dial itself then underwent some hand gilding, using the same gold. This was applied along the chamfered edge of the dial and furthermore used to finish the inside circle underneath the chapters as well, producing symmetry and a clean finish. Additionally, we also fabricated special bespoke brass fixings. These were used to keep space between the clock and the wall that it is mounted onto. As we do with most of our clocks, we also supplied one of our clock controllers to allow the clock to keep running on time, all the time.
