Corporate W20 doors and windows - Title Barn Renovation

March 2022

Back in the distant past, a previous owner of this property installed a 1970’s aluminium framed sliding door with hardwood frames and a softwood arch above. Whilst at the time the owners are sure the window was a state-of-the-art installation; it had become tired and detracted away from attractive architecture of the 18th century barn at the front of the house. It also conflicted with the building and its location.

The property is in a conservation village and sits between two listed buildings and because of the window it looked architecturally challenged. The current owners knew, upon buying the property, that something needed to be done.

They said ‘given the size of the window it also posed us with another problem, it is seen from the road and the window is a large feature of the building’. They had to get it right, both for planning purposes, but also for their own aesthetic needs.

That said, the owners instantly knew when they viewed the property that the opening was suited to a Crittall type of window. It would add an interesting feature to the property but would also enhance the buildings character.

Having explored aluminium and steel framed versions they finally drew the conclusion that if it was going to be Crittall style then why not fit the original. ‘We contacted Three Spires Glass of Coventry who were the nearest Crittall Specialist Partner. Three Spires measured, templated and the order was placed. This was a bespoke manufacture and as such we were expecting a long lead time.

Although the wait was only a couple of months, it felt like an age because we knew it would transform the property and couldn’t wait to see it in place. We were not disappointed. The window is spectacular and enhances the street view of the house. Even better is the view from the inside out which has given the room a modern twist using an old design. The craftsmanship is exceptional.

During the process Crittall continuously updated their partner regarding lead times and we felt constantly informed’.
