Precolor - The Benefits of GRP Water Tanks

Here at Precolor Tank Division, we specialise in offering our clients a range of storage tanks for liquids. Today we are going to focus our attention to some of the benefits of GRP water tanks. GRP stands for glass-reinforced plastic, which has many advantageous properties for use as a material for water storage tanks.

Corrosion Resistance

Whilst steel and aluminium water tanks may be more susceptible to corrosion, one of the main reasons for investing in a GRP tank is its resistance to corrosion. It can provide excellent insulation, so there is no need to paint or galvanize these types of tanks, with them already weather resistant and able to withstand extremes of hot and cold temperatures. As well as being beneficial to the outside, it is also the case for the inside of GRP tanks as they also provide corrosion resistance to chemicals, wastewater and sewage.

Lightweight

Whether or not you are looking for portable water storage tanks, using GRP for your storage tank means that you can take advantage of the material’s lightweight capabilities. It is a massive 70-80% lighter than steel, so it literally takes the weight off your shoulders when transporting as no heavy-lifting equipment is necessary as it is easily manoeuvred from the factory site to its destination.

High Strength

Despite its light weight, GRP water storage tanks also offer a superior strength to alternatives. It has an impressive strength-to-weight load-bearing performance due to the high glass-to-resin ratios used in the formulation of the material, outperforming traditional materials such as steel. Whilst steel offers high strength, it is only able to do so due to its heavy weight, and aluminium is lightweight, but does not compare when it comes to the weight factor. With GRP tanks, you get the best of both worlds.

Low Maintenance

Due to properties such as being corrosion-resistant, GRP has a long lifespan, making it well worth the investment. It can last around 25 years, and during these years it remains a low-maintenance option. Whilst you would have to coat or repaint steel and aluminium tanks, which can rust and corrode over time, GRP is extremely robust and will also not distort in shape when under impact.

Lower Costs

Whilst you may think that the steel and aluminium counterparts are cheaper, in the long-run, GRP water storage tanks can save you money. This is because it has a longer lifespan without the maintenance costs of the traditional alternatives. With its high tensile strength and non-conductive properties, you can enjoy a water storage tank that is extremely cost-effective, durable and sustainable, when you opt for a GRP tank.
