Stokvis packaged plant room facilitates Hereford hospital redevelopment

One of the most significant hospital redevelopment projects outside of the major cities is making use of a fully prefabricated boiler room which has been manufactured, customised and commissioned on site by Stokvis Energy Systems to meet the contract's short to medium term needs, and even service future roles elsewhere.

The Heatpak was supplied to Interserve Engineering Services Ltd so that the sector specialist could simply crane it into position onto a prepared base at the Hereford site of Wye Valley NHS Trust, where old-style ward blocks will be replaced with a modern new in-patient bedded facility.

The five metre by four metre, steel framed self-contained plant room features a pair of Stokvis Energy Systems' advanced R40-140 EVOLUTION modulating gas boilers, along with two Econopress pressurisation units and a bare plate heat exchanger. Its specification and design were refined in a process of liaison between the contractor, manufacturer and the project mechanical engineering consultants: the overall objectives being to obtain a turnkey package, offering both speed on site and future flexibility.

The Contract Manager for Interserve, Lee Mason, commented, "The Heatpak provides heating and hot water to an existing ward building which will remain following the demolition of four other buildings, including the plant room which served them, to make way for a new 72 bed block. Once it was delivered to site, we just had to make the final connections before Stokvis sent their engineer to carry out the commissioning which was completed in one day.

"This is a lot better than having different manufacturers attending site to commission separate pieces of equipment such as pumps. The Heatpak is planned to be in place for two years, but eventually, when the project is complete, there remains the potential to relocate the boiler room somewhere else."

Stokvis Heatpaks have been successfully employed by project teams involved across a variety of sectors including hotel and high-rise residential, with the bespoke structures being located at roof level, as well as beside or beneath buildings. In this instance, however, the bare plate heat exchanger was required to provide hydraulic separation for the new plant from the ageing heating mains. Stokvis Econoplate units can be specified to provide high volumes of domestic hot water or other services as required.
