Small, Unused Cellar Transformed into a Stylish, Modern Kitchen

April 2019

The Proposal
This house in Hale, Cheshire had a below ground space which the owner wanted to make into a kitchen, being mindful that its basement location might make it susceptible to damp or water ingress. They called in longstanding Wykamol partner, Basements North West, to offer their expert advice.

Their proposal included lowering floor levels to increase head height, while walls were to be taken down to maximise the use of space in the basement, including opening up a partly filled in chamber.

The Product
After completing the necessary wall removal and extensive underpinning, the basement was tanked out with Wykamol Pure Virgin HDPE Membrane, which is certified 100% waterproof. The project called for 8 mm membranes to walls and 20 mm to the floors with a drainage channel and pump system to manage and remove any water ingress from the cavity drain membranes. The membranes supplied were produced at the Wykamol factory in Lancashire, the only plant in the UK which manufactures Type C membranes for waterproofing in line with BS8102.

The Wykamol range includes membranes for use in every situation either internal or external, which allow the application of an array of finishes. The full range can be seen on our website

The renowned installer, Basements North West, of Hale is a family-run business which has been trading for more than 35 years and a Wykamol customer for almost 30 of them.
