ROCKWOOL CELEBRATES LOCAL AUTHORITY WINNERS IN ‘NOISE OSCAR’ AWARDS

ROCKWOOL was proud to present the London Borough of Ealing Council and National Grid with the prestigious Local Authority Award at this year’s John Connell Awards, organised by the Noise Abatement Society (NAS).

Held at the Palace of Westminster on the 24th October and known as the ‘Noise Oscars’, these unique annual awards are now in their 17th year. They acknowledge the importance of the quality of sound in our lives, and champion vital advances in reducing the negative impact of unnecessary and unwanted noise for benefit of the public.

ROCKWOOL, renowned for its market leading range of sound insulation products, sponsors the John Connell Local Authority Award which recognises services, campaigns and programmes that are shining examples of community co-operation, education and creative solutions to noise pollution problems. The London Borough of Ealing Council and National Grid were crowned winners of the award for their ambitious re-development and co-created noise abatement and management system for Almond Avenue Substation.

The Almond Avenue substation is critical, both locally and nationally, in the supply electricity to over 200,000 homes. However, loud, intrusive, humming noise was causing widespread disturbance to residents and threatened the plant’s on-going viability. Taking the strategic decision to avoid enforcement action and prolonged court proceedings, the council worked collaboratively with operators and residents to achieve a sustainable solution: a co-designed, visually appealing noise barrier which was erected around this extremely challenging, high voltage 15,000m2 site, successfully mitigating the noise.

Westminster City Council were also highly commended in the category for their advanced Code of Construction Practice.

The Local Authority Award celebrates councils who demonstrate imaginative and sustainable initiatives in the management of noise issues. ROCKWOOL UK are champions of mitigating noise through good design in the built environment. In their, report Good Growth, Quiet Buildings, they bring together compelling evidence to demonstrate the damaging effects of noise pollution on health and well-being, showcasing solutions for domestic, public and commercial buildings.
