Unity Academy, Blackpool is a vibrant coeducational school with academy status, located in the Warbreck area of Blackpool. The school’s facilities have recently been transformed, resulting in an outstanding 21st Century learning environment for pupils and staff.
The school was originally constructed in the 1970s and has undergone various upgrades, to increase the thermal efficiency of the buildings. However, the roof itself had been untouched and the original mineral felt membrane was now inadequate for the building.
The Academy found the perfect long-term solution to this issue in the form of Elastaseal Warm Roof System, from Tor Coatings. Firstly, the thermal insulation was affixed to the roof to reduce heat loss and increase the roof’s thermal efficiency.
The cold-liquid roof coating system could then be applied to all areas of the roof and used to seal abutments, such as numerous roof lights and other protrusions; providing an overall waterproof membrane that could not be achieved with any other method.
The Elastaseal coating system is compatible with almost all other sound roofing materials so there was no need to strip out the existing roofing membrane. Importantly, the coating could be applied and completed while the building remained fully operational to the pupils and staff of Unity Academy.
Elastaseal works by providing the roof with a seamless barrier membrane, that is not only 100% waterproof but also allows the roof to breathe. The flagship Elastaseal system delivers 25 years’ waterproof protection and its performance is certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA).
