REA Metal Windows Limited; Established in 1906. Specialists in the manufacture, installation and glazing of steel windows and doors.
REA operates an independently audited quality management system which complies with the requirements of EN ISO 9001: 2015 (BSI Cert No.FM 20449). We also manufacture the frames generally in accordance with BS 6510 which gives you the assurance that our products are to the standard you specify.
All our products are made to order from various galvanised steel profiles to suit most applications ranging from single paned ’hole in the wall’ installations, to multi framed composite assemblies for both fire rated and non-fire rated installations.
REA – W20 Steel Windows
The ’REAsteel W20’ range of hot rolled steel window profiles were introduced in the early 1960’s. The W20 steel window profiles, especially of the intermediate glazing bar at 28mm, make this product range the most suitable for replicating the small and marginal paned fenestrations typical of the 1930’s. W20 steel windows can accommodate sealed glass units up to 16mm thick, which can comply with Part L (England & Wales) of the current Building Regulations.
W20 can be used for internal room dividers, partitions and viewing windows; fixed screen can offer 30 minutes integrity only fire resistance.
REA – W30 Steel Windows
REA W30 windows are designed for domestic use, with a slender profile W30 is installed widely as a Georgian type window. W30 steel window profiles are rebated to accept up to a sealed glass unit up to 18mm thick. WER ratings B & C available.
REA – W40 Steel Windows
The REAsteel W40’ range of profiles is an evolutionary development of the traditional hot rolled steel window. The system was designed to accommodate up to 26mm sealed double glazed units, which can comply with Part L (England & Wales) of the current Building Regulations.
All hot rolled sections are rust proofed by the hot dip galvanising process to BS EN ISO 1461: 2009 and generally followed by a stove polyester coating to BS EN13438:2013 in a standard classic ral colour (wide range of colours available).
REA – “Tubular” range of Steel Glazed Screens & Steel Glazed Doors.
The main benefits of the product are robust durability, torsional rigidity and slim sight lines, allowing panes with a high glass to frame ratio. The depth of the frames at typically 50mm, together with a wide range of different depths of beading allowing a wide range of glazing options.
REA can also provide “Integrity Only” and “Integrity and Insulated” fire rated doors and fixed screens. These products are suited to the protection of adjacent properties at site boundaries and internal and external escape routes such as corridors, staircase and lift enclosures.

Rea Replace Windows at Cavendish Mill, Aston, Greater Manchester.

Client: New Charter Housing Trust.
Located on the banks of the Aston canal in Greater Manchester, the Grade II* listed former cotton mill is now been converted into social housing.
The building had fallen in to a poor state of repair & the wooden windows installed only ten years earlier were of poor standard & did not match the properties architectural heritage. It was decided by the buildings new owners New Charter Housing Trust that the building should be returned to its former glory & that new contemporary steel windows would be fitted.
REA Metal Windows won the contract & received an order for the replacement of some 350No. W40 high performance Part L compliant steel windows. As part of the 350No. Steel window replaced, there were also some special feature windows which had to be replaced “like for like” at the entrance to the building (the following picture & attached PDF drawing illustrates the curved feature windows which had to be hand made by skilled windows makers).
The project was completed on time & to the delight of the client & residents who have gained increased levels of comfort from the double glazed/double weather-stripped W40 steel windows.
The head of Investment for New Charter Housing, Danny Vose, comments:

SWA member helps create ‘agricultural’ drawing archive
The architectural practice responsible for creating a spacious and temperature stabilised archive facility from a derelict farm building, has featured W40 steel windows and doorsets. This is a key part of the design, amongst a mix of materials chosen to offer both economy and high performance, in harmony with the rural setting.
Rea Metal Windows, a Steel Window Association member based in Liverpool, won the contract to produce the five double leaf doors and two windows for the award winning Shatwell Farm Architecture Archive. Designed by Hugh Strange Architects and converted by Hobhouse Limited, the Somerset farm project transforming an old brick and stone barn into a 120 square metre studio and storage facility that combines conservation with off-site construction techniques.
The director of the architectural practice: Hugh Strange commented: “With the archive being on a farm yard surrounded by buildings, like a wood store and other barns, we drew inspiration from the ordinary everyday quality of the setting, part of which was the galvanised language, so as well as the door frames we specified the downpipes in a galvanised finish, and the exposed electrical conduit inside the building.”
“The contents of the building are very valuable to the owner and so security was also a crucial consideration, meaning steel framed doors and windows were a positive, which we also had glazed with laminated glass.”
The concept for the project was to stabilise those walls that were saveable and then to insert two prefabricated modules, made of cross-laminated timber to provide thermal mass as well as insulation. These are over-sailed by a single ventilated roof structure to create a weatherproof shell which still reveals its origins.
Hugh Strange continued: “The north building provides a studio space that is characterised by large French windows which offer views to the wooded valley outside. In contrast the south building houses a drawing archive and display space that is predominantly top-lit by a generous rooflight.”
While the classic W20 profiles are well able to conform to Building Regulation as well as the aesthetic requirements in such heritage situations, the more modern looking W40 frames specified by the architects offer enhanced thermal performance. All the frames were glazed with 24.4 mm IG units featuring an outer leaf of 6.4 mm laminated glass and a 4 mm toughened inner, with argon gas filling to achieve a U-value of 1.2 W/m2K.
Hugh Strange’s Shatwell Architecture Archive won a RIBA national award and was also nominated for the Mies Van Der Rohe European Architecture Prize.
