The Rundum Original is, as the name suggests, the original ‘round the corner’ sliding garage door. These doors are suitable for listed buildings, luxury new build, conceptual architecture and replacement projects. This door combines the function of an automatic remote controlled garage door with an integral pedestrian door, with the capability to curve in a convex or concave fashion as well as in an S-shape.
The versatility of the Rundum Original sliding garage door is demonstrated in the wide variety of projects on which we’ve been commissioned. These include aircraft hangars, curved buildings, out houses, coach houses, commercial buildings and many applications where an oversized or underground multi-user garage door was required.
These garage doors are often specified on grade II listed or ultra-modern contemporary buildings. The panels are made with a subframe, externally boarded and come complete with tracks, gearing and other accessories. The nature of sectional garage doors makes them ideal for incorporating windows and ventilation louvres into the panels to give the garage additional aesthetic appeal or purpose.
Sectional garage doors can be manufactured in timber and aluminium as standard, but they can be over clad in numerous materials to meet aesthetic goals. Corten steel, bronze, copper and façade panels are just some of the finishes that a Rundum Meir side sectional garage door can offer.
Ceiling mounted sectional doors open vertically upwards and along the ceiling. As with our side sectional garage doors, overhead sectional doors offer vast creative potential in terms of the materials used in their manufacture to meet the desired aesthetic goal. For safety, a finger safety guards are incorporated between the panels and a wide range of individual panel patterns and designs are available.

Rundum Mier garage doors come with our MZ4 door mounted operator and modern 4-channel remote control handsets, which can be programmed to achieve a pedestrian door within the door. Rundum Meir operators have been specifically designed to provide outstanding operation, convenience and safety. Our solid timber range includes spruce, sapele, hemlock, cedar, larch, European oak and iroko, and other timbers may be available on request. Timber finishes can include a range of products such as stains, paints or oils from a variety of manufacturers and we purchase tree trunks specifically for our customers to ensure consistency in the appearance of the woodgrain. Can you get taller garage doors?
Most standard garage doors will normally be made to a height of around 2.1m or 7 feet. Whilst this may be right for the majority of typical garages, this is not ideal for every type of building or usage of a garage.
The good news is that extra tall garage doors are available offering a height of up to 4m in timber and up to 5m in aluminium with a bespoke garage door from Rundum Meir. This is because every Rundum Meir garage door is made to order and based on one of four core operating systems, which means it is not only possible to specify very wide opening doors up to 12m, but also doors with additional height.
Extra tall garage doors are often associated with industrial or commercial buildings, including aircraft hangars, to provide easy access for high vehicles or to allow for the manufacture of very large products in an indoor environment, such as modular buildings. And here, Rundum Meir can provide a robust solution which can be designed to meet very specific operational and aesthetic goals.
However, there are a whole host of building types and applications that lend themselves to taller than average garage doors, and they can make an impressive statement in new building designs too.
Why your home could benefit from an extra high garage door
One of the main reasons why many of us will avoid using a garage to park the car is because standard size doors can mean the opening is only just big enough to drive through. And it is also important to consider that today’s cars are often much larger than in previous generations.
The new Land Rover Defender, for example, stands at 1.97m from the ground, but it is not the only tall vehicle available. The rise in the popularity of SUVs and people buying high specification campervans means many homeowners could do with their garage doors being just that little bit bigger!
Side opening doors provide more headroom
With standard size one-piece up and over and overhead sectional doors, the available opening height may be slightly less than what is possible because of the way the door is positioned when in the open position. This is why a side sectional or side sliding ‘round the corner’ door will offer slightly more and less cluttered headroom.
Rundum Meir garage doors that open to the side follow a track that runs down one of the internal walls when opened. As a result, the overhead space is clear – this can be beneficial for access and for utilising the internal space above head height should it be required, including for storage.
Aesthetically distinct
Building conversions from industrial to residential may feature large openings which can be retained with relative ease using an extra tall garage door. This could deliver an attractive aesthetic feature which is preferential to infilling the opening in part to accommodate a standard size door.

Rundum Meir Hidden in plain sight – how to create seamlessly integrated garage doors
Does a garage door always need to be obvious? In the vast majority of building designs, the garage is clearly defined, and why not? Taking this approach means the garage door can be made into a design feature in line with other building elements such as windows, doors and decorative cladding.
But what about integrating the garage door into the building envelope in a way that makes it barely noticeable? This alternative design style is possible by specifying bespoke garage doors by Rundum Meir which can be manufactured using the same materials as those surrounding the garage opening.
The results of the seamless integration of the garage door where it appears frameless and sits flush with the wall can be stunning. And the creative potential is vast because of the four types of door that Rundum Meir offers, all of which can replicate vertical or horizontal lines in other building elements for visual consistency.
Side sliding Rundum Original ‘round the corner’ doors and side sectional garage doors are ideal for matching vertical lines such as timber cladding. For example, in one Rundum Meir project (as shown in the main photo of this article), a timber cladding on batten style spans across the width of the building at ground floor level, cleverly disguising the side sectional garage door that can be opened when required.
Another example of a façade integrated door, created using a Rundum Original side sliding door, shows how this particular door’s ability to curve round corners can facilitate an interesting building design.
The municipal building in Germany, which provides a vehicle storage and road grit hall at a motorway maintenance depot, features a grey timber clad side opening door on the corner of the building, matching the curved design of the building to be almost unnoticeable when closed.
Using a bespoke overhead sectional garage door style or a one-piece ‘up and over’ can unlock further creative potential as the door can become a continuous part of a seamless façade. The door can be clad in the same materials as the rest of the façade or other features on the building elevation, disguising the fact that the garage exists.
