Precast Concrete Headwalls

Precast concrete headwalls offer a cost effective alternative to in-situ structures for pipework & concrete box culverts discharging into open watercourses such as rivers, ditches, ponds, swales and tidal environments. Althon have the largest range of precast concrete outfalls & spillways available in the UK, with models that meet Sewers for Adoption guidelines, a range of rectangular models conforming to Severn Trent Water specifications with an array of wingwall profiles, backwall widths and heights as well as being able to offer bespoke precast outfall and wingwall solutions.

Sewers for Adoption (SFA) Headwalls

Althon Sewers for Adoption precast headwalls should be used when part of a Section 104 Agreement and the sewers are to be adopted once completed by the local Water Company. The materials used and installation must comply with the ‘Sewers for Adoption’ guidelines.  Althon precast concrete outfalls offer a cost effective alternative to in-situ structures for connecting pipework discharging into open watercourses.

Rectangular Sewers for Adoption (RSFA) Concrete Headwalls

Althon Rectangular Precast Headwalls are Sewers for Adoption compliant precast concrete headwalls for outfalls discharging into ponds, swales, ditches beaches and rivers. RSFA precast headwalls come with the option of two thicknesses of toe, 300mm and 500mm, each of which is available in three depths. Althon manufacture RSFA precast headwalls with three different wall profiles to suit the gradient of the bank as follows 1 : 1 slope, 1 : 2 slope and 1 : 3 slope. RSFA precast concrete headwalls are typically supplied complete with Kee Klamp® Handrail to the back wall and horizontal sections of the wing walls, a galvanised steel access ladder and a self-closing gate with padlock facility above.

Angled Precast Headwalls

Angled precast headwalls allow pipework entering a watercourse at an angle to be accommodated or for an outfall to be situated on a bend in a river. We cast the openings in our headwalls to suit your pipe diameter and material. We will also set the invert level of the pipe into the concrete headwall to your specification if required. We can also cast in multiple pipe openings if required.

Rectangular Headwall Range

Althon offer a large range of rectangular precast concrete headwalls for pipework discharging into ponds, swales ditches, rivers and tidal environments. Our rectangular headwalls are available in a range of backwall widths and heights for pipework up to 750mm.

Precast Headwalls for Culverts

Our precast headwalls for culverts offer a Cost Effective alternative to in-situ structures for connecting Pipework discharging into Open Watercourses. All Drainage pipes discharging into Open Watercourses, such as Swales, Ditches, Ponds and Rivers, should be fitted with an appropriate Althon Headwall. Althon Headwall units can be Pre-Fitted with a Range of Accessories such as Flap Valves, Penstocks, Kee Klamp Handrails and a selection of Gratings dependant on application.

Precast Headwalls with Penstocks

Althon precast headwalls can be supplied to site with factory fitted penstocks. As standard we offer penstocks fitted to our headwalls to suit pipework from 100 up to 1500mm. When required we can offer bespoke sized penstocks or headwalls to accommodate penstocks.

Splayed Wing Wall Headwalls

Althon SP ‘Splayed Wing Wall Headwalls’ are precast headwalls produced with a higher wing walls at the front of the apron. SP precast headwalls are for inlets or outlets situated in locations with high or steep embankments or where the structure is required to provide protection to an accessory such as a flap valve, duck bill valve, stop logs or weir wall. Althon SP precast concrete headwalls offer a cost effective alternative to in-situ structures for connecting pipework discharging into open watercourses.

SFA Headwalls with Precast Steps

Althon offer precast concrete Sewers for Adoption compliant headwalls complete with precast concrete steps. Typically our precast headwalls with steps will be supplied with an appropriate Sewers for Adoption compliant outfall safety grille and galvanised steel Kee Klamp® handrailing with gated access.

Drainage Channel Range

Althon channel drainage range of surface water drainage products caters for all types of construction site circumstances. Products include concrete slot drainage channels, GRP drainage channel, polymer concrete drainage channel and concrete drainage channels. Althon’s drainage channel products have been developed to be lightweight, easy to transport and quick to install and maintain. The Althon linear drainage channel range has been optimised for stability, discharge capacity and longevity for a range of applications and load classes, from A15 through to F900. We offer drainage channels for use in residential environments through to heavy industrial applications such as docks and airports.

All Althon headwalls are manufactured using a trademarked eco1™ concrete mix design. The standard eco1™ concrete mix, which is a Cement & GGBS blend, significantly reduces C0²e emissions by 50% when compared to a standard CEM1 concrete mix. In addition to eco1’s™ environmental credentials; it achieves Design Chemical Class 4 and Design Sulphate Class 4 making Althon headwalls suitable for use in aggressive environments.

Althon headwalls can also be manufactured using other proprietary mix designs for even greater carbon savings.

C0²e stands for Carbon Dioxide Equivalent

C0²e is a unit of measurement used to express the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted because of human activity.

Great Yarmouth's Herring Bridge Project

March 2024

In 2023, Althon supplied a number of precast concrete headwalls, to Great Yarmouth’s Third River Crossing (Herring Bridge). All of these headwalls were made to order, and the majority of these were supplied with fitted accessories such as Kee Klamp Handrail, HDPE Non return Flap Valves, and Pond Liner Brackets at our customer’s request. One of the benefits of opting for pre fitted accessories, means there is less time spent on installation; saving valued time for contractors.
