Historic buildings are invaluable treasures that connect us to our past. Preserving these structures requires a delicate balance between maintaining their historical integrity and integrating modern building and safety standards.
As the sole UK agent for Jakob Rope Systems, MMA Architectural Systems have been instrumental in achieving this balance through innovative solutions that respect and enhance historic sites across the UK.
Protecting Heritage at Kidwelly Castle
Kidwelly Castle is a Norman castle which was built in the 12th century in Wales. Here, we faced the task of enhancing visitor safety without altering the site’s historic character. By integrating Webnet frames into the castle’s existing structures, safety barriers were provided without disrupting views. The stainless steel finish is both sleek and subtle, offering unobtrusive protection for the bridge.
Subtle Safety Measures at Ripon Cathedral
In another significant project, MMA Architectural Systems implemented Webnet balustrading at Ripon Cathedral. The challenge here was to provide necessary safety features that would not detract from the cathedral’s historic ambiance. The solution involved installing Webnet panels that now provide robust protection while remaining virtually invisible against the backdrop of the ancient stone architecture.
Enhancing Safety at York Minster
At York Minster, one of the UK’s most iconic Gothic cathedrals, our team installed our Webnet wire mesh system in front of the renowned Rose Window. This installation provides essential fall protection for the cathedral’s high-level walkways and narrow stairwells, ensuring safety without compromising its architectural beauty. The discreet nature of Webnet allowed it to blend seamlessly with the historic fabric of the building, preserving its visual grandeur.
Safeguarding Tradition at the Tower of London
The Tower of London, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presented a unique challenge: to create a secure aviary for the site’s famous ravens which are integral to its legends and traditions. To achieve this, we supplied and installed 46 square meters of Webnet wire mesh, creating a safe and secure habitat for the birds, while allowing visitors to still view them. Our team also installed Webnet as balustrade infill along the south walkway’s historic bridge gates, offering safety to visitors while preserving the Tower’s majestic views.
