KEIM MINERAL PAINTS CASE STUDY: HOLLAND HOUSE, LONDON
November 2021

KEIM ROYALAN® ON PREVIOUSLY PAINTED STONE

Holland House is a 17th Century, Grade I listed country house in Holland Park, Kensington. It was bombed during the Second World War, destroying all but the ground floor. The east wing has been restored and currently houses a youth hostel. Holland House was one of the first great houses of Kensington and was lived in by Cromwell’s army during the English Civil War.

Nicola Young, Senior Colourist of KEIM Mineral Paints, visited Holland House to trial bespoke coloured samples, a Portland stone and a Bath stone colour were created.

During Nicola’s site visit, there was evidence of stone erosion and salt efflorescence on the west arcade, which was likely a result of moisture ingress. This needed to be identified and rectified prior
to proceeding with KEIM for a successful application of the paint products to ensure their longevity.

Pre-treatment and repairs were carried out and left to dry for a minimum of 15 days prior to the application of KEIM Mineral
Paints.

The west arcade was decorated using KEIM Royalan Grob, diluted with KEIM Royalan Dilution. Followed by a coat of KEIM Royalan (in a bespoke colour) and a final coat of KEIM Restauro Lasur system
(in a bespoke colour) to achieve a stone effect.

The soffits of the west arcade, lower level causeway and east wing were decorated using the KEIM Royalan system. This system was specified to help resist the algae due to the location and tree canopy
surroundings.

Holland House now looks aesthetically pleasing and has returned to its previous glory.
