Tips for Luxurious Living During Difficult Times
February 2021

Times are tough, even for those who are used to a little more luxury. Whether you enjoy stylish holidays or just eating out at a nice restaurant with friends, when this is no longer possible, it can have a big impact on our state of mind and how much we enjoy life. Perhaps it’s the global health crisis, perhaps your finances are not what you would like them to be right now. Whatever the case, that doesn’t mean you need to say goodbye to luxurious vibes. To help those looking to add or bring back a sense of luxury to their lives, this article offers suggestions for how to treat oneself and enjoy life during times that are difficult.

INVEST IN YOURSELF
By learning a new skill, you can not only find a new hobby to enjoy but it can be inexpensive too. Further still, your new skill could lead to a whole new way of living and that luxurious lifestyle you have been seeking. You never know what the future might hold. Madeleine from the lifestyle blog Moderately High Maintenance, told us that she believes investing in yourself can lead to more luxury in life: “I think one of the best ways to make life feel more luxurious is making an investment in yourself by learning a new skill. There are so many free resources out there whether it’s blogs, YouTube, or a book from your local library that can help you make that investment with little or no resources.”

TREAT YOURSELF TO LITTLE THINGS REGULARLY
If heading out on stylish excursions or splashing the cash on must-have items isn’t possible, that doesn’t mean you can’t feel good and enjoy life. By treating yourself to the little things on a regular basis, you can create that much-desired atmosphere of luxury and enjoyment. You could schedule in regular pampering sessions at home, jazz up your bath with candles, set up a home spa, enjoy a great bottle of wine with dinner each night, or once a week go all out and prepare a lavish home banquet, re-creating that restaurant feel in your very home.

Christine, from the lifestyle blog The Fabulous Times, has a bunch of great tips in this department and shared a few of them with us: “Although the current climate means we’re unable to enjoy things like a long holiday, dining out with friends, the sauna, swimming, etc., all is not lost. Just because we’re restricted due to the global pandemic, there are lots of things that we can do to make daily life feel more luxurious (and more cheerful) during lockdown.

“For me, the simplest things can bring joy and a moment of luxury to each day. Luxury to me is a very sensory experience, think taste, scents, sounds and beauty. At home we’ve been enjoying a lovely evening meal, whether that’s home cooked or supporting our favourite local restaurants via a takeaway. A homecooked meal can be made luxurious by setting the table with fresh linen serviettes, a candle and classical music for ambience.

“Lighting a candle or incense or just adding a drop of your favourite essential oil to a bath can bring a moment of luxury, creating a relaxing spa-like experience in your home. Listening to a beautiful piece of music – ok so, it’s not the same as a live orchestra – but it can feel like a luxury to be able to enjoy the talents of some incredible musicians be that on the radio or laptop.

“A daily walk out in nature can be an indulgence for the scenes, noticing the fresh air, birds, trees and beauty of nature, taking a deep breath and feeling thankful for our health.”

MANAGE YOUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Sarah, from the luxury lifestyle blog Dukes Avenue, looks at things from a slightly different angle, framing her tips for luxurious living around health and wellness. Sharing her advice with us, she said: “My top tip for making life feel more luxurious even during difficult times is to make your health and wellness a priority because luxury cannot exist without both. Take the time to enjoy walks that you might not otherwise go on, fill your kitchen with fresh healthy produce and experiment with new recipes, find joy in stillness through wellness activities such as home yoga or morning meditation, and indulge your senses with a hot bubble bath in the evening with a great book and beautiful, scented candles.”

BRING STYLE AND CONVENIENCE TO YOUR HOME
When it comes to luxury, convenience really is the way to go. If you are stuck at home and are looking for ways to attain that luxurious lifestyle, why not consider a bit of remodelling? There are lots of ways that you can make a few changes to your home and create a stylish, comfortable, and convenient space that you will make you feel fantastic every day. For example, you could install a home lift that takes you from the living room right into your bedroom. What could be more luxurious than that? How about kitting your bathroom out with a fancy new jacuzzi or a walk-in shower, so it becomes more than just a place to clean up? Or perhaps your dining room could be redecorated so that it becomes a space that rivals your favourite restaurant? There are lots of options available for luxurious home living.

EXPLORE LOCALLY WHEN POSSIBLE
Many of us are sorely missing our trips abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic and while even exploring locally isn’t always an option due to travel restrictions or anything else keeping you indoors, this can be an attractive alternative to long-distance travel. So, when it is possible and permissible, why not consider a local holiday and visiting great UK attractions instead for that taste of luxurious living? Megan, from the travel blog Mapping Megan, says for her, local travel is the key:

“Domestic travel is keeping me sane right now within Australia, and it’s never been a better time to explore locally and discover the gems in our own backyard that we rarely prioritize, but when you think of it, people from the other side of the world would spend thousands of dollars to come and see. The benefits of local travel being the opportunity to support your struggling local economy, the opportunity to feel that rush of excitement at experiencing something new, and the chance to see big tourist sites without the crowds. So why not play tourist in your own backyard – no passport required!”

APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE
Luxury living isn’t all about things. It can be a mental state too; knowing that your life is good, and you are fortunate to have as much as you do. Just being able to sit next to a lovely fire, on a comfy chair, with a good book will be seen as a luxury to more than a few around the world. Learning to appreciate life as it is, embracing the positives and the little home comforts at your disposal, will be far more rewarding in the long run. It’s easy to slip into the habit of always wanting more and feeling down when that lifestyle you have been accustomed to is taken away. But by appreciating what you already have, when those treats come in the future, they will be all the more satisfying.

REDUCE YOUR SCHEDULE
When many of us think of luxury, having free time to enjoy ourselves and do the things we love comes to mind. So, if you are thinking of ways to bring that sense of luxury to your life, taking some time to look at your daily schedule might be a good move. Perhaps you have taken too many responsibilities on at work or at home. Is there a way that you can offload some of these? Is there a way you can make things just a little less busy, and therefore carve out more leisure time for yourself? By doing so, you can reap the benefits, finding more time for rest and relaxation. You can replace those discarded tasks with fun things like family time or giving yourself a pamper. Whatever gives you a sense of happiness and luxury.

DRESS THE PART
What we choose to wear can have a big impact on how we feel. Dress like a slob, feel like a slob. But what about if you don’t have the means to assemble a vast wardrobe of amazing outfits? Well, blogger and public speaker Stefanie O’Connell recommends going for a capsule wardrobe: “You know those 2-3 pieces of clothing that just make you feel amazing, every time you wear them? What if your whole wardrobe was like that? A capsule wardrobe is all about quality over quantity. Save money by buying less and spend more on the pieces that matter.” By choosing to dress in clothes that make you feel good, you can bring that sense of style, luxury, and elegance that you have been looking for in your day-to-day life.
