Masonry Support Systems
Masonry cladding on steel or concrete framed structures is normally supported by stainless steel masonry support systems. Frame type, differential movement, type of cladding, masonry load and cavity width all need to be considered when selecting the most appropriate fixing solution.
Windposts & Parapet Posts
Ancon Windposts are designed to span vertically between floors to provide lateral support for panels of brickwork. They are designed to suit specific applications and are supplied complete with end connections and ties.
Ancon AMR is steel reinforcement that locates in a bed joint to strengthen masonry panels. The longitudinal wires are flattened to less than 3mm to ensure good mortar cover is maintained, even when the product is lapped or used in the same joint as a wall tie. AMR improves the structural performance of a wall by providing additional resistance to lateral load.
Stainless Steel Lintels
Ancon Lintels are manufactured from stainless steel and do not require any further corrosion protection. The standard range of Ancon Lintels is designed to suit the majority of loading conditions found in residential and commercial buildings. Special lintels can be manufactured to suit architectural features, heavy duty applications and wall constructions not covered by the standard range.
Stainless Steel Wall Ties & Restraint Fixings
Stainless Steel Wall ties and restraint fixings are an essential element in the stability of masonry panels. Ancon manufactures fixings in a variety of lengths and types for restraining brickwork, blockwork and stonework. The Staifix range of wall ties includes solutions for all types of masonry construction including traditional brick-to-block, thin-joint blockwork and timber frames.
Tie bars are increasingly being used in structures and buildings as an architectural as well as a structural element. Ancon Tension Systems have been designed to meet the demanding aesthetic requirements of today’s applications. A high load tension system is available - the Ancon 500 System.
Ancon Isolan connectors join external concrete balconies to internal concrete floor slabs. Used to minimise cold bridging, these connectors provide continuity to the thermal insulation in the wall. Standard systems, comprising rigid CFC-free polystyrene insulation and stainless steel shear reinforcement, suit most depths of cantilever and simply supported balconies.

Ancon extends its range of insulated balcony connectors
Construction fixings specialist, ANCON, has extended its existing balcony connector range to include three new thermally insulated systems designed to minimise the effects of cold bridging at concrete to concrete, concrete to steel and steel to steel interfaces.
The cold bridge formed by direct-fix balconies or where a continuous reinforced concrete slab is used can seriously affect a building’s thermal performance and lead to problems with condensation and mould growth. The new Ancon systems, called Isotec, STC and STS, are designed to provide an effective thermal break whilst maintaining full structural integrity by transferring moment, shear, tension and compression forces at the joint.
Comprising stainless steel reinforcement and mineral wool insulation, the new high performance Ancon Isotec system provides maximum corrosion protection and integral fire resistance. It is suitable for low energy concrete to concrete applications, including heavily congested or stepped floor slabs.
For steel balconies, the new range provides solutions for both concrete and steel structures where Ancon’s fabricated structural steel components are CE-marked, demonstrating legal compliance, design to EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) and manufacture at facilities externally audited by an approved body.
The Ancon STC (Steel to Concrete) system is a two-part assembly, comprising a cast-in anchorage and a post fixed bracket with integral thermal pad, reducing the risk of damage to the units on site during the construction process. For steel to steel applications, the Ancon STS system is a single, compact, easy to handle unit wrapped in thermally efficient polystyrene insulation. Both systems are manufactured to order by Ancon at its UK production facilities and provide the flexibility in design to suit the exact requirements of the balcony and eliminate clashes with cladding.
Ancon Marketing Manager, Annabelle Wilson, says, “We have extended our connector range as balconies are an increasingly popular feature in the residential sector, where designers are keen to add style and aesthetic appeal to high density occupancies.
Energy efficient construction is a key focus for our in-house product development team. In addition to these new insulated connectors, Ancon has recently extended its award winning range of low thermal conductivity wall ties and introduced an innovative helical fixing for insulated plasterboard.”
Details of the full Ancon range of balcony connectors, including the established Isolan system, used successfully throughout Europe for many years, are included in the new 32-page technical brochure ‘Thermally Insulated Balcony Connectors for the Construction Industry’, available to download from www.ancon.co.uk or in hard copy on request.
Ancon Launches BIM Object Library
ANCON, manufacturer of high integrity steel fixings, has launched a comprehensive BIM Object library to support the industry’s transition to digital building modelling.
Available free from the NBS National BIM Library, the new data-rich BIM Objects allow Ancon products to be easily incorporated into a 3D building model and its associated component database.
Offered as part of the NBS portfolio, users can be confident each file has been quality-checked by the NBS team, catalogued in line with the National Building Specification and has a product structure designed to work seamlessly with the BIM specification tool NBS Create, as well as being compatible with COBie spreadsheets and IFC data exchanges.
These NBS-verified BIM files can also be downloaded from the Ancon website.
Ancon BIM Objects cover a wide range of the company’s market leading products, including standard cavity wall ties and other masonry restraints, masonry supports, windposts and masonry reinforcement, tension bar systems, shear load connectors, stud rails and reinforcement continuity systems; all of which are critical to the structural integrity of a building and essential to an accurate BIM model.
In addition to 2D and 3D product representations, each BIM Object includes embedded product information and associated data to support the specification and provide an audit trail for the components throughout the life of the building. The objects also feature parametric design settings which provide the necessary flexibility to create project-specific Ancon details.
Ancon Technical Services Manager, Luke Woollen said, “Technological advances mean the construction industry is changing fast and, as a market leader, we are constantly working on new and innovative ways of delivering quick, accurate product information in a format to suit today’s specifiers. Our BIM Objects sit alongside a range of other downloadable technical resources available 24/7, including CAD details, NBS product descriptions, CE Declarations of Performance, interactive product selectors and design programs.”
Ancon Marketing Manager, Annabelle Wilson said, “We share the opinion that Building Information Modelling is the future for construction and are keen to ensure Ancon clients are able to capitalise on the many benefits and opportunities it brings, including cost reduction, greater collaborative working and early clash detection. We are pleased to support the industry drive towards widespread BIM adoption by investing in the creation of BIM Objects. In doing so we have ensured Ancon and those who specify, use and distribute our products, are well positioned to secure Government contracts which will be BIM compliant from 2016.”
