60 Holborn Viaduct Portland Stone Carved Panels

March 2012

60 Holborn Viaduct is an exceptionally traditional masonry project located in London. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and with Stirling Stone appointed as the fixing contractor. Our Portland Perryfield Whitbed was specified and approved.

Consisting of over 10,000 carving hours alone and even more involving masonry, Holborn Viaduct is as complex a project as we have produced in the past.

Recently completed are three of the carved panels situated on the ground to first floor of Farringdon Street, London. Situated below three moulded archway entrances the reliefs are highly ornate and intricate in design.

The enormous size of each panel (2610mm length x 125mm width x 1260mm height) allowed two of our skilled masons and carvers to work simultaneously at either end.

A plastic mould is marked onto the face of the sawn six sides Portland Perryfield stone:

At this early stage any area to be routed out (removed) were highlighted by cross hatching.

After the excess stone had been removed by routing, the skilled masons created crisp edge boundaries that the carving was crafted into.
Varying levels had to be constantly measured to ensure the correct shadow would be cast once fixed into positioned.

Sweeping curves were hand carved with a specific ˜tooled finish specified for the project. Four ornate birds and grapes can be seen across the panel and adorn the spiral reliefs.

Once completed the final curve was cut into place to be made ready for site fixing.

Each individual panel was replicated using the same method and will be showcased in our portfolio after the project reaches completion.
