JAGA TRVs: the simplest energy-saving accessory

June 2022

In last week’s Spring Statement, the Chancellor announced a 0% VAT on installing energy-saving materials including heat pumps and thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), in residential properties for the next five years. Great news for those looking to switch to a cleaner, more efficient heating system!

A TRV controls the flow of hot water through the radiator it’s fitted to. It works by sensing the air temperature around it. If the room is warmer than the setting on the TRV, the valve will close a little, reducing the volume of hot water flowing into the radiator. If the room temperature is lower than the TRV setting, the valve opens, increasing the flow of hot water into the radiator.

TRVs should always be set at the lowest setting that keeps the room to a comfortable temperature. A lower setting reduces the volume of hot water, therefore using less energy. In rooms that aren’t in use, TRVs can be used to maintain a minimum temperature to keep the room just warm enough to prevent damp, or to turn the radiator off completely if required.

TRVs are hugely important for optimising heating system performance, reducing energy wastage, and helping to create a balanced system. But around 60 million radiators in the UK currently don’t have one fitted.

The new building regulations coming into force this year should help reduce this number. They state that when a heating system is installed in a new dwelling or when a heat generator (i.e. a boiler or heat pump) is replaced in an existing dwelling, all heat emitters, outside the room containing the thermostat, should have a TRV fitted.

As Jaga’s Low-H2O radiators use 90% less water than traditional steel panel rads, combined with a good quality, fast response TRV, they’ll use even less water and be even more efficient.

Jaga valve sets can be purchased directly from us or via your local plumber’s merchant.
