Increased passenger capacity at London Bridge Station – one of the oldest in the world

The current £500m ($795.1m) station redevelopment project is part of the £6bn ($9.5bn) Thameslink Programme. The purpose of the project is to increase the passenger capacity and rail capacity at the station.

London Bridge railway station, built in the 1830s, is one of the oldest stations in the world and is located south-east of London Bridge on the River Thames, near Tooley Street in London. It is managed by Network Rail.

Construction on the redevelopment project began in 2013 and will be completed in 2018. BLÜCHER® EuroPipe was specified by WSP for its strength, integrity, longevity, ease of installation, and low weight. The bulk of the pipework, 250mm diameter, runs the length of each individual platform.

The majority is installed in a ‘crawl space’ with the remainder installed at height via lifting platforms. Price Building Services carried out the installation as sub-contractor to NG Bailey (Rail).

The station currently handles up to 42 million passengers in a single year. It is expected to handle a passenger capacity of between 50 and 75 million people a year after the completion of the station redevelopment project.
