The recent upgrades on the Leeming to Barton section of the A1 have been a long term project for ABG, so it is great to see the hard work that went into the scheme rewarded with a BCIA award earlier this year.
The scheme was awarded to the JV of Carillion and Morgan Sindall as an ECI, with one of the main areas of concern being the need for lorries to haul huge quantities of materials through small villages. ABG Fildrains were adopted by Carillion as their preferred solution because of the benefits of reduced material costs, speed of installation and perhaps most importantly reduction in the number of vehicle movements.
Carillion proposed Fildrain to Aecom and the Highways Agency, who accepted the viability of the system in principle but needed evidence of performance to back up their design calculations. ABG then undertook a suite of tests site specific soils to refine the design, which ultimately also required geogrid on the 7m and higher embankments.
