Thorn New PopPack: A World of Difference
April 2011
New PopPack: A World of Difference
Thorn’s all-new PopPack, the 16th generation of the world’s best-selling light fitting, is poised to change how contractors view fluorescent lighting. Suddenly, instead of the standard batten fitting, there is a luminaire with a quicker installation sequence, easier electrical connection, rapid authentic emergency conversion and straightforward presence and daylight detection. All in addition to T5 or T8 lamps and a wider range of attachments for commercial and industrial requirements.
Traditionally, contractors use a cumbersome mechanical fixing method that involves holding a fluorescent spine in one hand whilst trying to fasten it with the other. Thorn has devised a considerably faster two-stage method. First, two circular mounting plates (supplied) are fixed to the ceiling, or BESA box. Then the spine pushes into place with captive “twist to lock” yellow snap ratchets sliding onto the plates. Two other installation refinements with new PopPack – the flat spine maximises potential finger access for electrical connection and a rear channel effortlessly routes cable to the mains entry point. No wonder contractors are able to install nine new fittings in the same time it used to take to fit four.
An ingenious LED 3 hour non-maintained emergency module plugs directly into the end of any new PopPack, thus eliminating the need for separate emergency versions. The ‘plug and play’ theme continues with a presence detector and daylight sensor module.
Finally, a compact version that takes a 55W TC-L lamp will be introduced later this summer. Only 607mm long it produces a similar light output to a 1500mm fitting with 58W T8 lamp.

Thorn opens new factory and Academy of Light
March 2009
Thorn’s recently completed £32m factory and Academy of Light at Spennymoor, near Durham, marks the largest investment in the manufacture of lighting equipment and training in the UK for almost 70 years.
Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman, who opened the complex, said the new facility was “fantastic news", adding: " I am particularly pleased that the new site will include the Academy of Light training facility, which will help to maintain and develop skills.”
The Thorn Academy of Light Competence Sharing Centre, which fronts the new building, is designed to provide sales staff and customers with application-specific training.
The structure has a floor space of 3,000 square metres on two levels where up to 100 people can experience light at work, view exhibitions and attend workshops and CPD seminars.
But the heart of the Academy is the 37-metre-long demonstration zone tailored to specific applications, product introductions and new technologies. It is approached through an exhibition area, which currently demonstrates sustainability in architecture and engineering.
Spennymoor is about more than training, and the 40,000-square-metre building also hosts a relocated manufacturing facility and laboratory.
In October last year the company was working from a sprawling site nearby, compromising its ability to respond to customers’ demands. The new purpose-built factory is a model of efficiency, flexibility and closeness to the customer.
The move to the new plant was a perfect opportunity to invest in new technology and introduce a synchronised flow system, which has led to dramatic savings. For instance, the distance travelled by materials has been cut by 42 per cent.
Training, coupled with a culture of continuous improvement, are also lynchpins in the transformation of Spennymoor into a Lean Six Sigma organisation.
Eliminating wasteful reworking, unnecessary movements, downtime, inefficient work processes and overproduction enables Thorn’s output to be fast, flexible and cost effective – allowing the plant to produce quality luminaires that are reliable, available and affordable.
