SEALING NATURAL STONE JOINTS
November 2010
For many years architects and natural stone specialists have encountered the problem of how to seal joints in natural stone without the issue of migratory staining.
Migratory staining occurs when the plasticisers within the sealant migrate into the porosity of the stone, causing a dark mark (or “stain”) either side of the joint edge. (This can even occur with black marble, or with polished stone)
Sealants are often overlooked, or seen as a tiny part of the build cost, but migratory staining (see photo) can ruin the most prestigious of projects. Architects will often seek to minimise the size of any joints in natural stone facades, so as not to detract from the appearance, but joints – especially expansion ones – are essential in enabling the building or façade to operate correctly, and provide a watertight seal.
A huge amount of research and testing was under by Adshead Ratcliffe during the early 1990’s to solve the migratory staining issues in London. Now 16 years on, this expertise is being used in conjunction with a proven non-staining silicone sealant in a whole host of new locations, where a sealed joint is required with natural stone.
During these many years, Adshead Ratcliffe has built up a database of natural stone materials, and can advise as to the suitability of using particular sealants with each natural stone.
The product (Arbosil XL1099) is available in nine standard off the shelf colours (Buff, Grey, Limestone, Portland, Rustic Red, White, Black, Anthracite and Terracotta), but 20 more colours have been made to order for various clients to match other materials. All that is required for this colour matching service is a sample of the natural stone itself, or a RAL colour.
Adshead Ratcliffe (Arbo Sealants) have their own research and development facilities at their UK manufacturing headquarters in Belper, Derbyshire. Under the guidance of the Technical Director (Steve Brown) new stone samples are put under the microscope to undergo adhesion and staining tests.
Added this facility, are the many years of experience gained through our Technical Service Team, who can advise and prepare written specifications for customers, giving Arbo the winning combination.
Don’t be fooled by verbal promises of “it shouldn’t stain”, if the wrong type of sealant is used with natural stone, you will encounter migratory staining, which, once present it is very difficult to remove these days. Get your natural stone tested by the experts, don’t leave it to chance. Remember prevention is better than cure, and the costs of putting it right afterwards will be expensive.
