Rockwool Helps Edward Woods Estate
September 2010
Rockwool helps the Edward Woods Estate achieve a low carbon future
The work has begun on the extensive low carbon refurbishment of the Edward Woods Estate near Shepherd’s Bush in London. The project involves renovation of three 24 storey towers of this 1960’s social housing development rather than have them demolished and replaced.
The £12.2 million refurbishment of the Edward Woods Estate is intended to extend the life of the towers through comprehensive repair works as well as undertaking a thorough thermal and visual upgrade. In addition, the scheme establishes a flagship for building-integrated renewable technologies within the Borough.
The project will see all three of the tower blocks given a combination of insulation systems from Rockwool and sister company Rockpanel. These include cavity wall insulation, dry lining applications as well as rendered insulation and cladding panels that will smarten up the estate and improve energy efficiency plus lowering resident’s heating bills. In addition, building-integrated renewable technologies, such as photovoltaic rainscreen system will be used on the tower blocks and will generate around 82,000 kWh of solar generated electricity annually as well as wind turbine.
Residents have been involved in the scheme from the start, with representatives from each block working with the design consultants, using their local knowledge to help steer the proposals for the benefit of all who live there.
One of the most visible elements of the project will the replacement of the existing external brick finish which has deteriorated over the years. The brick cladding will be stripped away and replaced with a rendered external wall insulation system comprising of a light weight steel frame filled with 100mm Flexi between studs and 50mm Flexi behind in the original cavity. On the top of that a 90mm thick Rockshield insulation system will be externally applied to achieve a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K. This will be nine times better than the existing make-up.
The east and west elevations of the tower blocks will be blown with Rockwool EnergySaver cavity wall insulation up to the 24th floor and then externally clad with Rockpanel Rockclad Xtreme board
On top of the estate blocks, new build penthouse flats will be constructed incorporating lightweight steel frames with 300mm Flexi insulation, faced with Rockpanel wood finish cladding to achieve a U-value of around 0.15 W/m²K
Rockwool flat roof insulation will be included in the roof of these penthouses providing a U-value of 0.15W/(m²K). This will also improve the acoustic performance of the building, reducing noise level by 29 Db.
“In order to meet future Government carbon reduction commitments, the measures to be undertaken within this project will need to become far more common place”, explains Rockwool Project Manager Sylvain Melinand . “The greater use of external wall insulation as well as micro generation technologies will play an important part of meeting those objectives as we make existing social housing stock more energy efficient”.
The project has been designed by ECD Architects for client Hammersmith and Fulham Homes. The main contractor is the Breyer Group.
Rockwool launches RockPrime loft insulation
September 2010
Rockwool launches RockPrime loft insulation
In response to the ever increasing demand for faster and more effective installation of materials such as insulation, Rockwool, has launched a new approach to insulating the loft area of houses.
Rockprime is a new mechanically installed blown loft insulation which offers a quality, super fast installation and total flexibility for the complex nature of the loft area within old and new houses.
The traditional means of insulating a loft is to use some form of rolled insulation which takes time and can be cumbersome working around the hard to treat lofts such as those with low pitched roofs, intricate nooks and crannies or the complex nature of modern trussed rafter roof constructions.
Rockprime can be installed to any specific thickness to suit required U-Values, even if a thickness of as much as 465 mm is required. The loose lay nature of the product means that a good coverage between and over obstacles such, as joists and pipework is easily achieved, even into difficult to reach eaves, thus minimising thermal bridges.
As Rockprime is a blown material it will not have any wastage, whatever is left over in the installation will be used on the next site. It has no settlement after installation, will provide acoustic benefits and will not be displaced by air movement. Non-combustible Rockprime is installed by approved installers who are trained by Rockwool to ensure a quality installation at a competitive price.
Rockprime can be installed in almost half of the time of traditional roll product with a similar set up time. This means a high quality product can be installed at a similar cost to traditional rolled insulation.
Rockprime is available through a national network of approved contractors. Each contractor employs fitters who are trained and vetted by Rockwool staff to ensure that high quality standards are upheld.
Rockprime is BSI Kitemarked and approved by both the Energy Savings Trust as well as OFGEM.
One of the key advantages of Rockprime is that it is a simple process to meet ever more stringent U-values in the roof space. The installer simply pumps the insulation material until it gets to the required depth which has been marked out using depth gauges installed before installation commences. The consequence of this approach is that Rockprime can provide simple solutions to today’s and future demands of the energy regulations.
