Sir John Deans College, Northwich
March 2012
Sir John Deans College, Northwich
Sir John Dean’s College in Northwich is being completely redeveloped by ISG under a design and build contract, with the Manchester office of Broadway Malyan providing the architectural input.
The Director in Charge of the Project for Broadway Malyan, Mr Tim Brown, comments: "This is a total redevelopment of the original sixth form college, in two phases, with a new multi-functional block being built in phase one. This includes a new entrance area, a Learning Resource Centre with science blocks above, and a series of teaching blocks that span off an internal street. This is a very established college in a sensitive planning area, where they wanted to use a palette of materials which were traditional yet contemporary.
"Our original concepts, for the project employed copper cladding on the elevations, but value engineering compelled us to look at the specification again. As a result of this process, we patterned the façade with timber, Reglit insulated glazing panels in stead of windows, and the Trespa on the three storey entrance area.
"We needed a cladding material which would give us the appearance of copper, yet that was affordable; and using the Trespa in two tones – the matt and the silk - as a random combination achieved this. It avoids the effect of having the solid mass of a single colour and, as you move around the building, you get the feeling that the light is changing on the material. So although this was primarily a budgetary decision it worked out well in the end."
Installed on a lightweight grid of aluminium rails, fixed back to any type of substrate or main structural frame, Trespa can be employed as a rainscreen cladding system in a wide variety of applications.
The panels themselves are a high pressure laminate, available in a full range of sizes and choice of finishes. They combine an attractive appearance and excellent physical characteristics – such as durability and resistance to UV discolouration - with the use of sustainable raw materials and low embodied energy.
Frequently seen on science parks and other commercial buildings, Trespa’s specification for Sir John Dean’s College demonstrates the product’s validity in more traditional and vernacular styles of architecture.
New Trespa Design Centre Opens in Barcelona

New Trespa Design Centre Opens in Barcelona
In May 2011, Trespa International will be opening a new Trespa Design Centre in Barcelona. The Trespa Design Centre, which will showcase design solutions by Trespa International and its sister-company Arpa Industriale, is set to offer a unique experience. It will not only be a showcase for exterior and interior design concepts, but also a unique and inspirational location for meeting, learning and networking with architects throughout Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Europe.
Trespa International is opening a new Trespa Design Centre in Barcelona. Following in the footsteps of the successful Trespa Design Centre in New York, which opened in 2008, the new Trespa Design Centre will feature the innovative and aesthetically outstanding products and solutions offered by both Trespa International and its sister company Arpa Industriale. Both companies operate independently, with Trespa focusing on exterior cladding applications for ventilated façades, while Arpa concentrates on interior design solutions. However, both companies share a similar vision of innovation and aesthetics.
The main purpose of the Trespa Design Centre is to meet and inspire the large concentration of trendy and innovative architects – and to demonstrate commitment to the Spanish architectural community. According to Trespa’s Commercial Director Aart-Jan van der Meijden, Barcelona was selected as the ideal location, after extensive research: “Barcelona has both a rich architectural heritage – and is a vibrant centre of modern architecture, much like New York and Shanghai.”
Trespa’s new Design Centre is located in El Born, a very modern and stylish area with trendy and upmarket shops, cafes, restaurants and bars – a conscious choice says Mr. van der Meijden: “The Centre’s proximity to the Architectural College is important, however, our key consideration was that we wanted it be in a dynamic and fashionable part of town where people want to spend time. In El Born, we have found a place that combines fashion, food and fun.”
Design concepts and products
As a recognised market leader, Trespa continues to make a significant contribution to the development and design of exceptionally aesthetical and durable ventilated façade concepts. With this in mind, Trespa’s objective is to promote design concepts rather than isolated products. Whilst it may inspire the architectural community to consider Trespa or Arpa products for new building design and refurbishment, the Centre’s key purpose is to become a meeting place for architects from Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Europe.
Like its counterpart in New York, The Barcelona Design Centre will provide networking and discussion space for architects, designers and their clients. By offering meeting rooms, internet access and printing facilities, it will be an inspirational place where you can share ideas, work and learn. To that end, it will encourage participation and meetings by committees and external organisations.
Aart-Jan van der Meijden: “Trespa wants to be seen as integral parts of the architectural community. We are passionate about design – and it is for this reason that we are continuously looking to develop innovative and durable solutions, with partners who are able to help us push the envelope. These may be leading architects or companies that are able to add value to projects, either in terms of aesthetics, quality and/or durability.”
Mr van der Meijden concludes: “Thanks to this approach – and the quality of our products - Trespa exterior Meteon façade solutions have become increasingly popular and are widely specified by many well-known architects around the world.”
